Pirosmanis um 1900 in Tbilissi entstandene Porträts und Tierbilder sind von eigentümlicher Ausdruckskraft und großer Empfindsamkeit. Seine Landschaften und Alltagsszenen greifen Elemente mittelalterlicher Ikonografie auf und zeugen von einer tiefen Verbundenheit zu seinen Landsleuten. Zugleich erkannte die Avantgarde in Pirosmanis Werk eine neue, radikale und unbekannte Form von Malerei. Wie Henri Rousseau oder Marc Chagall gehört der Autodidakt zu den außergewöhnlichen, schwer einzuordnenden Künstler\*innen der frühen Moderne. Dieser Katalog zeigt Pirosmanis Können in zahlreichen Abbildungen: Wie er mit präzisem, skizzenhaftem Pinselstrich auf schwarzem Wachstuch die sparsam aufgetragenen Farben wie aus dunkler Tiefe glühen lässt. Pirosmani war ein Meister der Konzentration - und ein Geschichtenerzähler. Wie im Katalog von georgischen Kunsthistoriker\*innen kenntnisreich dargelegt, war er ein singulärer Künstler, eine widersprüchliche Figur und ein wichtiger Teil der Kunstszene in Tbilissi, das damals als das »Paris des Ostens« galt. In eine Bauernfamilie hineingeboren, kam NIKO PIROSMANI (1862 - 1918) 1870 nach Tbilissi. Gelegenheitsarbeiten und das Malen von Porträts oder Kneipenschildern verhalfen ihm zu einem bescheidenen Einkommen. 1912 erregte er die Aufmerksamkeit georgischer und russischer Avantgardekünstler\*innen, die seine Werke ein Jahr später in der Ausstellung Mischén (Zielscheibe) in Moskau gemeinsam mit Natalia Gontscharowa, Michail Larionow, Kasimir Malewitsch und Marc Chagall präsentierten. Eine geplante Ausstellung in Paris wurde durch den Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges verhindert. Pirosmani starb völlig verarmt 1918.
