Ajouter au panierPrinted for Francis Kirkman, . 1671. Parts 1 & 2 only of 4, both later facsimile reprints ( 1874 ? ) 8vo. ( 175mm. ) [3] iv - xiv [1] xvi - xvii [3], [1] 2 - 571 verso blank. Plates [2] including a frontispiece ; [24] , [1] 2 - 378. Plates [2]. Title-page of Part I printed in red and black, stain at the foot of pages 96 / 7( i.e…. G8 & H1 ) in Part II, otherwise the contents of both volumes are clean if slightly dusty on the upper edges. Modern quarter paper backed boards with printed paper labels on the spines. Richard Head ( 1637 ? - 1686 ? ) was an author, born in Ireland, and best remembered for this book, the pretended autobiography of a professional thief. The book is full of racily told indecent episodes. Seemingly when the manuscript was offered to the censors of the press they considered it so obscene they refused a license to print, it was then sold secretly as a forbidden book ( see the Preface Part II ). When the " refined " mauscript finally passed the censors , one can only surmise that the original must have been singularly rude and disreputable . Francis Kirkman wrote a second part, 1671, with a third and fourth part promised by Kirkman in the same year. All the early editions are scarce. " A reprint of the original four parts was issued in 1874 in 4 vols. 8vo. " - ODNB. For more details of Richards Head see - ODNB.
