Kristina Bekenova presents a collection of interviews with fifteen emerging African leaders, musicians, poets, artists, doctors, environmentalists, defenders of animal rights, and tour operators, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Nigeria, Malawi, Rwanda, Somaliland, South Africa, South Sudan, and Zimbabwe. These interviews are an important, effective, and efficient way to make Africas authentic voices heard. The interviewees explain what Africa needs most, what they are doing about it, what vision for Africa they have, and how they think their ideas can be implemented. They share genuine African bottom-up perspectives, voice their understanding of African natural and cultural issues, identify Africas true needs, and formulate recommendations from an original African perspective. This book presents a unique opportunity to hear their opinion, to learn from Africa, and to understand what the continent needs as it makes progress along its developmental path.

Even though traditional microfinance has successfully paved the way for offering financial services to low-income populations without traditional collateral, many microfinance institutions (MFIs) are still reluctant to move into rural areas and agricultural finance, due to the perceived high risks and costs. Daniela Rottger's research demonstrates how MFIs can mitigate risks and costs of lending to smallholder farmers by using a combination of proven traditional microfinance mechanisms while adapting specific loan features and lending mechanisms to the particularities of smallholder agriculture. She systematically compares traditional microfinance risk management mechanisms with agricultural microfinance approaches and identifies successful strategies. For this purpose, eight MFIs providing agricultural finance to smallholder farmers in four countries in East and West Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Benin, Cameroon) were interviewed and their loan features and agricultural lending mechanism were analyzed. The study shows that MFIs can successfully serve smallholder farmers in rural areas. However, the extent of adaptations is reason enough not to commit to such an endeavor lightly. A strong commitment combined with sound in-house knowledge of agricultural value chains and the flexibility to adapt loan terms and lending procedures to the particularities of agriculture are needed to successfully develop and sustain agricultural microfinance.

A foreign affairs journalist for 60 years, Jonathan Power has traveled all over the world, writing, besides his column in the International Herald Tribune and the New York Times, long articles for Encounter and Prospect magazines, eight books on foreign affairs and many TV and radio documentaries, mainly for the BBC, one of which won the silver medal at the Venice Film Festival. He has interviewed over 70 of the world's most famous and influential presidents, prime ministers, and political and literary icons including Ignacio Lula da Silva, Indira Gandhi, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Georgi Arbatov, Sonia Gandhi, Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmidt, Olusegun Obasanjo, Julius Nyerere, James Baldwin, Andy Young, Jesse Jackson, Manmohan Singh and Paul McCartney. Notably, Power was the first journalist to report at length in English on the trafficking of African migrants across the Sahara and into France. This inspired his first novel, "The Human Flow"- a love story set against the backdrop of the migrant flow from West Africa to Paris and London. In addition to his writing, Power has consulted for organizations such as the Aspen Institute, the International Red Cross, the World Council of Churches, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, UNICEF, and the Catholic Churchs Commission for Justice and Peace in England and Wales. Jonathan Power tells the story of his life and what it was like to be a foreign affairs journalist for sixty years. Within this context, new technical innovations seek to overcome challenges resulting from volatile renewable energy production and lacking storage capacities. Blockchain, a distributed ledger technology using cryptography, gained prominence as an integral component within the increasingly decentralized and digitalized global energy infrastructure.Against this background, Alexander Freier argues that the application of blockchain technologies represents a viable option to both enhance the efficiency and balancing of renewable energy as well as to subsequently reduce GHG emissions if the following three components are met: the ongoing implementation of technological advancements, an adequate global normative framework, and general trust on behalf of key market actors to promote blockchain in the energy sector on a global scale.Departing from an analysis of the relationship between climate change and energy, Freier conducts a legal analysis to explore possible bottom-up perspectives for the implementation and transfer of technological innovation derived from climate contracts. This analysis examines the technological infrastructure surrounding blockchain energy as well as its application to the Brooklyn MicroGrid in the US and the WindNODE trading platform in Germany from an International Relations perspective. Alexander Freier argues that the application of blockchain technologies represents a viable option to enhance the efficiency and balancing of renewable energy. This book offers a fresh perspective by showing how she gradually shifts her identity from a fiction writer to a non-fiction writer. And, more importantly, her adherence to the 'Italian phase' in academia has not previously been the subject of such a thorough critical investigation. There is a sudden change in her writing and her choice of language; she prefers Italy and the Italian language to English and Bengali. Such spatial as well as linguistic dislocation leads her towards a new space in which she anticipates her freedom of choice, confronts difficulties, and often gets confused, too: to be in Italy or not to be.What this book seeks to touch upon is how Lahiri's fictional as well as nonfictional writings bring out her and her fictional characters' translational and transnational existence reinforcing her literary motto 'I translate, therefore I am'.It is of special interest to students as well as scholars of Diaspora and Migration studies. Written in exquisite prose, Noche Triste is a devastating, revelatory chronicle of a complex illness. In this unflinching memoir, Robert Radin describes a painful struggle with anorexia that begins with the diagnosis of a friend's sister. Interweaving his personal recollections with historical accounts of fasts, holy visions, hunger strikes, and force-feeding, he turns a lens on the role that hunger has played both in public and in private, not only in the realms of medicine and psychology but in art, culture, and religion. Ultimately, though, this is a strikingly intense and personal story framed within the larger context of an illness that continues to defy generalizations. -Leah Browning, author of Orchard City and In the Chair MuseumRobert Radin's Noche Triste goes straight to the heart of anorexia and refuses to look away. It's a heartfelt, fast-paced, often startling study of the disorder's paradoxes, and Radin's own passage through them. By disappearing you appear, he writes, and by appearing you disappear. I found it riveting.-Rosecrans Baldwin, author of Everything Now?Robert Radin's poignant, beautiful memoir tells the story of his quiet descent into anorexia with grace and sensitivity. Noche Triste is every bit as informative as Hilde Bruch's classic The Golden Cage. When Radin reveals the traumatic antecedents of his eating disorder, his voice is clear and brave.-Robert Brandt, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and co-founder of The FACE Program.

The site of the worst nuclear catastrophe in history, the primary target of the Kremlin's disinformation campaigns as well as the country to spark the collapse of the Soviet Union and to stand up to its neo-imperialist successor: Ukraine has been the first to face and, at times, to set in motion processes with worldwide consequences. After Russia's full-scale invasion compromised the global system of security, the value of Ukrainian knowledge and experience can no longer be dismissed. The urgency to learn with and from Ukraine is now existential for the rest of the world. This unique collection presents essays, in English and Ukrainian translations, by emerging authors from Ukraine and the UK who employ cross-cultural dialog and the art of storytelling to open up Ukrainian perspectives on the challenges facing humanity worldwide. The volume's contributors are Olesya Khromeychuk, Sofia Cheliak, Kateryna Iakovlenko, Olena Kozar, Kris Michalowicz, Phoebe Page, Jonathon Turnbull, and Mstyslav Chernov. While much of this occurs concealed from the gaze of the public, innovation has transformed from an enigmatic black box into a predictable and manageable process-provided one possesses the right tools and knows where to look and what actions to take. The method presented here for evaluating and managing startup risks is geared towards the uncertain world of innovative startups and enables entrepreneurs and investors to navigate it more confidently. The book focuses on the initial stages of startup creation all the way through to implementation and marketing. It adopts an incremental delivery perspective, underscoring the importance of understanding the intricate processes of bringing an innovative idea to fruition. The book also explores broader applications of the proposed Hypothesis Testing Method for the systemic development of innovation-promoting ecosystems and startups in the context of post-war economic recovery. This guide will be invaluable to practitioners seeking to navigate the complexities of innovation, harnessing the potential of cutting-edge startups, and contributing to the resurgence of economies emerging from the aftermath of armed conflict.
