Ajouter au panierDie beiden frühesten Ausgaben des Rudimentum novitiorum", die erste lateinische bei Brandes in Lübeck (1475) und die zweite, die französische unter dem Titel Mer des hystoires" bei Le Rouge, sind in ihren Illustrationen teilweise aufeinander bezogen, besonders bei der Anlage der Stammbäume hat sich der Formschneider von Le Rouge… durch die Lübecker Ausgabe anregen lassen (Details in Katalog Schäfer und bei Baer). Trotz dieser Anregungen gelten die Holzschnitte der Le-Rouge-Ausgabe als eigenständige (E.A. Wright:"The most impressive features of the illustrations of the Mer des Hystoires are entirely new"), und so unterscheiden sich die Holzschnitte, die Alexander d. Gr. in beiden Drucken ins Bild setzen, unverkennbar voneinander (ein Vergleich lässt sich am einfachsten über die jeweiligen Digitalisate der BSB München bzw. der BN Paris durchführen). Wenn E. Spencer bezogen auf Vérard schreibt: "None of the woodcuts inked and printed in the vellum copies are ever merely coloured" (in: Trapp [Hg.], Manuscripts in the fifty years after the invention of printing, London 1983, S. 67), so gilt das auch für unsere Alexander-Darstellung auf Papier: Der Illuminator hat über den eingedruckten Holzschnitt eine eigenständige Miniatur gemalt, die der Linienführung des Holzschnittes nicht immer folgt. Die Miniatur zeigt Alexander auf einem Thron sitzend, der mit blauem Tuch ausgeschlagen ist. Der König ist gekleidet in einen rosafarbenen Hermelinmantel mit breitem weißem Kragen, einen blauen Umhang und blaue Strümpfe sowie in ein gegürtetes bräunliches Unterkleid mit weißen Ärmelstulpen. In die Kolorierung der Kleidungsstücke sind feine goldene Linien eingezogen, die den Eindruck erwecken, als sei der Stoff mit Goldfäden durchwirkt. In der rechten Hand hält er ein Zepter, in der an den Körper gewinkelten linken eine Schriftrolle. Im Bildhintergrund sieht man bräunliches Mauerwerk, die Seitenteile des Throns bestehen aus stark perspektivisch gezeichneten waagerechten Holzwangen und senkrechten Balken, letztere mit der Bourbonenlilie verziert. Vergleicht man unsere Miniatur mit dem Holzschnitt, dann fällt auf, dass der Faltenwurf der Kleidung, den der Formschneider durch Linien vorgegeben hat, bei den helleren Farbtönen gut zu sehen ist, aber nicht mehr so als Faltenwurf in Erscheinung tritt wie im unkolorierten Zustand. Person und Kleidung sind sehr fein ausgemalt, die Gesichtszüge des viel sprechender als im Holzschnitt. Das Mauerwerk im Hintergrund gibt es im Holzschnitt nicht. Hinsichtlich der Zuschreibung des Holzschnitts sind unterschiedliche Vorschläge gemacht worden: sie konzentrieren sich im Wesentlichen auf den Meister des Kardinals von Bourbon" (Avril, vgl. Nettekoven 2004, S.60) und auf den Drucker, Pierre Le Rouge, der als Reißer, Formschneider und Buchmaler tätig war (Monceaux; vgl. Tenschert/Net- tekoven 2003 S. 15). Der Illuminator ist wohl im Umkreis des sog. Jacques de Besançon zu finden, möglicherweise im Meister des Robert Gaguin" (vgl. Avril / Reynaud 1993, S. 262 ff., König/Tenschert 1993, S. 82 ff.) oder in Le Rouge selbst (vgl. Tenschert/Nettekoven a.a.O.). In Passepartout; ausgezeichneter Zustand.
