He was Professor of Mathematics, Astronomy and…Philosophy at Leiden University and used his position to promote Newton's mathematical and astronomical theories. Ajouter au panierA substantial and historically important collection of the medical writings of the Scottish physician and scholar Archibald Pitcairne, one of the leading proponents of iatrophysical medicine in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Educated at Edinburgh and Leiden, Pitcairne sought to explain bodily functions thro…ugh mechanical and mathematical principles, heavily influenced by Newtonian science and the circulation theories of Harvey. This 1715 English translation gathers together his influential medical dissertations, lectures, case studies, and theoretical writings, including discussions on the circulation of the blood, fevers, respiration, anatomy, and the philosophical foundations of medicine. Particularly notable is the appended treatise on the treatment of smallpox, a subject of immense importance in the pre-vaccination era. The volume offers a vivid snapshot of Enlightenment medical thought at a moment when physicians increasingly attempted to reconcile empirical observation with mechanical philosophy. Pitcairne's work was deeply influential upon later physicians in both Britain and continental Europe, especially within Edinburgh's medical tradition. This copy retains attractive contemporary blind-paneled calf boards and bears several early ownership inscriptions. Condition & Binding: Contemporary full calf with elaborate blind-paneled decoration to covers and raised bands to spine. Front board detached; rear board holding but worn. Binding heavily rubbed and scuffed with notable edgewear, surface abrasion, and wear at corners and joints. Spine worn with some loss and cracking. Internally, the text is complete but heavily affected by old dampstaining throughout, especially to preliminary and terminal leaves, with staining extending through much of the text block. Scattered foxing, toning, and handling wear throughout. Several early manuscript ownership inscriptions appear to title page and endleaves. Overall- poor to fair.

The rare offprint, with presentation inscription at the head of the title page, 'Rev. Dr. Robinson, from the author'. As early as the 1823 Faraday had done important work showing that gases such as chlorine and carbon dioxide could be liquified by exposing them to high pressure and low temperatures, a major contribution to modern theories of the nature of matter. Here he returns to the subject, experimenting with substances such as ethylene (olefiant gas), hydriodic acid, cyanogen, and nitrous oxide. The recipient of this copy, astronomer the Rev. Thomas Romney Robinson (1793-1882) was a child prodigy who enrolled in Trinity College, Dublin at age twelve, becoming a fellow in 1814. In 1823 he was appointed astronomy at Armagh Observatory, where he established a rigourous routine of positional observations' with 'a determination unusual in observatories of the time, and quite exceptional in one so small, isolated, and poorly situated for observing'. He 'published a great many papers on a wide range of topics across physics and astronomy. He was in great demand as an erudite and entertaining public speaker on scientific subjects, having made his name at the early meetings of the BAAS' (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). Robinson was president of the Royal Irish Academy, a fellow of the Royal Society, and received honorary degrees from Dublin, Oxford, and Cambridge. Norman Library of Science and Medicine 760.

Ajouter au panier4to. [ii], 225-273 pp. 5 figs., tables, 8 plates (5 folding). Dis-bound. Very good. FIRST SEPARATE EDITION of James Forbes' study of the effects of the atmosphere on solar radiation. As early as 1830 Forbes had begun to investigate radiant heat phenomena without significant results. After learning of Melloni's successful detecti…on of the refraction of thermal radiation, he visited Paris in 1833 to confirm Melloni's results, whereupon he requested Melloni to supervise the manufacture of a thermopile for use in his own investigations. With this instrument Forbes, in November 1834, discovered the polarization of radiant heat by transmission through tourmaline and thin mica plates and by reflection through the latter. Using mica for dipolarization, he was successful in demonstrating the double refraction of thermal radiation, and in 1836 he found that heat could be circularly polarized by two reflections in a Fresnel rhomb of rock salt. He received the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society of London in 1838 for these discoveries and in 1845 was granted a royal pension for his scientific work. James Forbes was professor of natural philosophy in the University of Edinburgh and was Secretary of the Royal Society of Edinburgh from 1840 to 1851.
