While the recipient's identity remains uncertain, the inscription suggests it was presented to a member of the Institut de France. An important early work in the history of electrochemistry and the development of fuel cell technology, in this landmark Bakerian Lecture, Sir William Robert Grove (18111896) explores the decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen through heat and voltaic ignition. Building upon his earlier work on the gas voltaic battery (1839), Grove's research laid the foundation for fuel cell technology by demonstrating the direct conversion of chemical energy into electricityan insight that would not be fully realized until the 20th century. Offprints of Grove's papers are scarce, and this example represents a key moment in the study of electrochemistry and alternative energy, with a possible presentation/association inscription. Offprint from Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 1847.
