Ajouter au panierSoft Cover. Etat : Very Good. First Edinburgh edition (ESTC N388), published simultaneously with the London edition. Engraved illustrated mounted inside front wrapper. First two pages and last page lightly spotted and creased, small internal tear to epilogue page. 1757 Soft Cover. 74, [2] pp. 8 1/8 x 5 1/2. Plain olive wrappers, not contemporary. It appears likely this was trimmed from a quarto edition, as the margin along the binding edge is considerably smaller than the fore edge margin. This production was Edmund Kean's acting debut, and the play was admired by David Hume ("the true theatric genius of Shakespeare and Otway, refined from the unhappy barbarism of the one and licentiousness of the other") and Thomas Gray (the author the author "seemed to have retrieved the true language of the stage, which has been lost for these hundred years"). It was first performed the year before it was published anonymously by Scottish minister John Home. It is a tragedy in blank verse, and has been referenced in several important literary works (Mansfield Park, The Mill on the Floss, Vanity Fair, Nicholas Nickleby, etc.).…

Ajouter au panierFIRST EDINBURGH EDITION, 8vo, pp. [ii], 74, [2]. Near contemporary red and gold floral patterned wrappers, with later brown cloth clamshell case, lettered in gilt. A touch of spotting. Wrappers a little creased and faded. A 1935 newspaper clipping reviewing a revival of Douglas loosely inserted, smaller clipping about actress Mrs Siddons pasted inside box, ?[John Home]? pencilled to title-page. The first Edinburgh printing of the famous play by Scottish minister and writer John Home (1722-1808), which debuted in Edinburgh on December 14th, 1756, and its immense success brought on a production at the Theatre-Royal in Covent Garden from March 14th, 1757. The text saw print in London a few days before this edition, though without the additional nationalistic prologue ?Spoken at Edinburgh? present here. (ESTC records another 1757 Edinburgh printing but its shorter page count matches those of later reprints.) In the weeks following the play?s debut, the Edinburgh Presbytery sent ?a letter of admonition? to members of the church who had been in attendance due to the play?s ??pernicious? and ?criminal? nature? (Shiffler, Journal of the Presbyterian Historical Society, Vol. 38, No. 1, pp. 26-38). The outrage from the presbytery led Home to resign and pursue a career in writing, and it inspired Home?s friend and fellow clergyman Alexander Carlyle to pen a satirical pamphlet titled ?An argument to prove that the tragedy of Douglas [by J. Home] ought to be publickly burned by the hands of the hangman? Many copies of the play survived in compiled volumes of drama and are now seen disbound or in modern bindings; examples in attractive early wrappers like these are rare. ESTC N388. …

Spine darkened more than the boards. Maroon title label stamped in gold. Text block good and tight. 441 pages + 2 pages of ads. Nice even margins and square corners. Only mild and even toning from age. Two blank pages at the front are detached but present. Inside front cover has an engraved bookplate with the name R.H. Shepherd, with 6 handwritten lines below it, initialled RHS and dated 25 October 1845. Below the bookplate a small illustration from a bible is affixed, showing a scene from Matthew. Front free endpaper, also detached, has a few names written on it. In the top right corner, 'John Cooke, 1785.' In the middle of the page, 'Presented by Mr Cooke to Mrs. Shepherd.' Below that, the note, 'The above signature is the autograph of Rev. John Cooke [illegible] my brother in law. R.H Shephed.' On the next blank page, there is a 1955 presentation inscription in ink. On the title page, more ownership notes, 'R.H. Shepherd 1796.' 'Elizabeth Shepherd presented to her by her father R.H. Shepherd, Octo 25, 1845.' Very probably the book belonged to Richard Herne Shepherd (1775-1850), a revivalist preacher in Chelsea. I am not able to determine who the Rev. John Cooke was. Ajouter au panierLeather. Etat : Good. First edition. A very scarce, first edition of this compilation of the letters and journals of renowned Scottish author, advocate of the Covenanter movement, and Principal of Glasgow University, Robert Baillie, complete here in two volumes. First edition. Complete in two volumes. Uniformly bound in full calf. A collection of letters and journals from Robert Baillie, a Church of Scotland minister who became well-known as an author and a propagandist for the Covenanter movement. In his engagement with the religious controversies of the mid-seventeenth century, Baillie advocated firm adherence to Christian doctrine by reflecting on the truths revealed in Scripture. This work is declared to be 'Containing an impartial account of public transactions, civil Ecclesiastic and Military, both in England and Scotland, from 1637 to 1662; a period, perhaps, the most remarkable that is to be met with the British History'. With an account of the author's life. Compiled and edited by Robert Aiken. With the bookplate ot R. E. Maddison and the Earl of Normanton. Bound in full calf. Externally, sound, with rubbing to the extremities and joints. Evidence of label removal and slight cracking to the spines. Joints are also cracking, heavier to the front of volume I. Small patch of worming to the rear board of volume II. Front hinge to volume II is strained, with the front board tenderly held to volume I, and may detach with further handling. Bookplates to front paste down and endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a little age toned, with a few light handling marks and spots, heavier to the front. Good. None (illustrateur). book.…
