Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Fair. No Dust Jacket. This is three volumes of the set, Vols. IV, VII and VIII. They are 12 mos measuring 4? x 7?, bound in what appears to be the original leather with five raised bands to the spine. The are in fair condition. Boards detached or detaching, leather quite scuffed and some rubbing to the corners, spine tips chipped, spines cracking. Interior end papers have been detached with the boards and are chipped as a result, otherwise the contents are clean and unmarked. Fragile but readable as is, a good candidate for rebinding, and a fascinating look at Europe and the French Court during the last half of the 17th century from someone ? Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy was an eight-volume collection of fictional letters claiming to have been written by an Ottoman spy named "Mahmut the Arabian",in the French court of Louis XIV. The letters cover the period of 1637 to 1682 in France, from the last years of the Regency of Anne of Austria and Cardinal Richelieu through the long reign of Louis XIV and his minister Cardinal Mazarin. The letters form a rambling journal of gossip on current politics and satire on society.Mahmut sends reports from Paris to Constantinople on politics and current events in France, but corresponds privately on other subjects including religion, and adds stories and anecdotes for diversion. His observations range from those on political figures such as Richelieu and Mazarin to speculations on the status of women, advice about state policy, and major interventions in controversies about religious doctrine and their consequences. His political position in the letters changes from that of liberal Catholic to that of a rationalistic Deist. It is agreed that the first volume of this work was written by Giovanni Paolo Marana (1642-1693), a Genoese political refugee to the French court of Louis XIV. The remaining seven volumes appeared first in English between 1691 and 1694, prefaced with a letter claiming that they were translated from a discovered Italian manuscript. There has long been a controversy as to the authorship of the volumes subsequent to Marana's first. They have been attributed to many writers, most notably Robert Midgley and William Bradshaw who produced the English translation. However, given the similarities between the letters, and the stylistic coherence of the whole series, the likeliest author is Marana himself.…

Modern 3/4 blue morocco over marbled paper covered boards, with gold lettering to spine. Manuscript note on fly leaf: a premium awarded to Miss Eliza Dudley for her studiousness and good behaviour in School by the Sabbath School Society, Brighton, Dec. 16th, 1827. Engraved frontispiece by Frederick Hendrik van Hove. Published two years after the king's death, "The Life and Memorable Actions of King William III" is a panegyric biography of William III (1650 -1702), sovereign Prince of Orange from birth, Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland, and Overijssel in the Dutch Republic from 1672, and King of England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1689 until his death. A Protestant, William participated in several wars against the powerful Catholic king of France, Louis XIV, in coalition with Protestant and Catholic powers in Europe. Many Protestants heralded him as a champion of their faith. In 1685, his Catholic father-in-law, James, Duke of York, became king of England, Ireland and Scotland. James's reign was unpopular with the Protestant majority in Britain. William, supported by a group of influential British political and religious leaders, invaded England in what became known as the "Glorious Revolution." Manuscript note on fly leaf age-toned and partly water-stained at lower margin. Lower corner of frontispiece slightly chipped (not affecting text or image). Minor and sporadic age-toning throughout. The last two leaves of the publisher's advertisement age-toned and slightly brittled along edges. Binding in very good, interior in good to very good condition.…

Ajouter au panierCloth. Etat : Very Good. First edition. An expanded edition of this essay collection, which was first published in 1724 as one volume. A very scarce work, with essays on various subjects. First thus, the first edition in two volumes. This work is very scarce in any edition. Rebound in full cloth bindings, and bound without the original endpapers. The topics of these essays span from friendship, love, gallantry, marriage and morality to history, poetry and mercantile affairs. ESTC no. T135939. The works have been published anonymously, but are knowingly attributed to Aaron Hill and William Bond. Printed the same year as the Dublin imprint. Pages 481-2 of volume I have the incorrect running title as called for, 'no.117'. With a frontispiece to volume I. Volume I contains 57 essays whereas volume II contains 40. Aaron Hill was an English dramatist who was a perfectionist when it came to his writings. Some believed that his polished nature lead to a lack in spontaneity with his dramatic works. He famously had some controversy with Alexander Pope after he wrote several satiric lines on him. This then meant that Hill was referenced in Pope's 'Dunciad' which fuelled the controversy. Hill managed the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane when he was 24 years old. Whilst doing so he staged the premier of George Frideric Handel's 'Rinaldo'. This was the first Italian opera designed for a London audience. These essays contain critical views on a variety of literature, art and society. Rebound, in full cloth bindings. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Stamps to the title pages of both volumes, 'New York Historical Society'. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with occasional scattered spots. Very Good. None (illustrateur). book.…

Complete in eight volumes.Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volume I.The twenty-sixth edition.'Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy' is an eight volume collection of fictional letters claiming the authorship to be an Ottoman spy named 'Mahmut' in the French court of Louis XIV.The letters cover the period of 1637 to 1683, from the final years of the Regency of Anne of Austria, to the long reign of Louis XIV.As a narrator, Mahmut gossips about contemporary politics and the society of the court. These observations include looks at the Cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin. This was a very popular work when first published, admirers including Daniel Defoe, who wrote his own 'Continuation of Turkish Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy in Paris' in 1718, which covered the period of 1687 to 1693.Volume I was written by Giovanni Paolo Marana, a political refugee to the French court of Louis XIV. The subsequent seven volumes were first written in English and appeared between 1691 and 1694. Full speckled English calf, spines in six compartments divided by raised bands, covers framed with gilt rules and floral roll in blind, red morocco letter-pieces gilt, edges speckled red. A superb set, in a handsome contemporary binding, securely bound and clean throughout. ESTC citation no. T91588. Blackmer 210. Moore 406. Volume One, by Marana, a Genoese political refugee to the French court of Louis XIV, is a translation of a manuscript in the Bibliothèque Nationale, in Paris, and originally published in parts in 1684, in French as l'Espin du Grand Seigneur and in Italian as L'esploratore Turco. Translated into English by William Bradshaw in 1687 under the supervision of Robert Midgley, who held the copyright. The remaining seven volumes appeared first in English, between 1691 and 1694, prefaced with a letter claiming their translation from a discovered Italian manuscript. Their authorship has been attributed to various writers, most notably Midgley and Bradshaw. The letters, written by one "Mahmut the Arabian," cover the period of 1637 to 1682 in France, from the last years of the Regency of Anne of Austria and Cardinal Richelieu through the long reign of Louis XIV and his minister Cardinal Mazarin. Taken together, they form a rambling journal of gossip on politics and society. Mahmut's observations range from those on political figures such as Richelieu and Mazarin to speculations on the status of women, advice about state policy, and major interventions in controversies about religious doctrine and their consequences. The series launched a literary genre, the pseudo-foreign letter, of which Montesquieu's Lettres persanes and Goldsmith's Chinese Letters are examples. Daniel Defoe admired the spy's deist rationalist sympathies, and extended the narrator's account from 1682 to 1693 in his Continuation of Turkish Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy in Paris (but see Furbank & Owens, p. 8). Volume I: viii, [6], 484 pp., [2], (one large map of Yemen hand coloured in outline), tables / Volume II: [12], 455 pp., [1], engraved vignettes on title pages, illustrated with 94 engraved plates and 31 engraved plans and maps (many folding), modern half-calf with marbled boards, new endpapers, some browning in places, Untrimmed, with remnants of stitching, S.J. Baalde / J. van Schoonhoven & Comp., / Bartholome Wilde, Amsterdam / Utrecht, first Dutch edition, 1776-1780. This first Dutch edition of Niebuhr's travels to the East. Carston Niebuhr (1733-1815), a German mathematician, cartographer, and explorer in the service of Denmark, is renowned for his participation in the Royal Danish Arabia Expedition. The famous account of the Royal Danish expedition (1761-67) to Constantinople, Egypt, Sinai, the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq and Persia. It was the first scientific expedition to that areas sponsored by King Frederick V of Denmark, and from which Niebuhr returned as the only survivor. The expedition faced continuous physical hardship and danger from the moment it failed to leave Danish waters against winter storms, until the loss of all its members, except Niebuhr, as a result of malaria in Yemen. Nonetheless, the scientific discoveries that were made and the array of manuscripts that were recovered, aroused lasting interest among Europeans, curious to hear about a part of Arabia that had previously been closed off. The plates include illustrations of food, shoes, clothing, inscriptions, coins, agriculture, military exercises in the Yemen, the mosques of Mecca and Medina, and maps of Oman, the Arab Gulf, Suez and the Red Sea. Niebuhr was famous for his map of the Yemen (55 x 35 cm) which he calculated by traversing the country and measuring the distances mile by mile. It was the map of the Red Sea that contributed to the British in India re-routing their cargoes via the Suez instead of around Africa. For the next century this map served further European explorers of Arabia. His map of the Arab Gulf is the earliest map to mention Kuwait. Niebuhr is also one of the first to call the country Yemen instead of Arabia Felix. His work still forms one of the most authoritative descriptions of Arabia and in particular Yemen. The first edition appeared in German in Copenhagen in 1772, and then this Edition in Dutch, soon after, the French Edition - The second French version is by an anonymous translator. "He was the first European to mention the spread of the Wahhabi revolution, an Islamic fundamentalist movement which had a tremendous influence on the history of Arabia" (Waldman, 1992). The expedition embarked in 1761 to Alexandria via Marseille, Malta, and Istanbul, before going on to Alexandria, Cairo, Sinai, Jiddah and their destination, Yemen. In Yemen, Niebuhr adopted local dress and ate native food. He then continued on to Bombay, and returned to Denmark via Muscat, Bushire, Shiraz, and Perspolis. The journey was ultimately perilous, as Niebuhr was the only member of the expedition to return home alive. This book was the result of the productions he made while abroad, and includes accurate transcriptions of cunieform at Persepolis, which would lead Orientalists to decipher Persian cunieform. Niebuhr distinguishes between knowledge gleaned from indirect sources, and that which he experienced first-hand. The illustrations throughout are striking accompaniment's to the narrative including scenes from daily life, architectural views, maps, and reproductions of archaeological features. See Starnes & Noyes who devote the whole of chapter XIII to this work. Alston V, 92: "The dictionary contains additional lists of terms used in law, and proper names. It is an unconfessed abridgement of Kersey's revision of Phillips' dictionary, though it contains much dialectal material not found in that work." Kennedy 6213; Vancil, p. 138.…
