Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -Scholars continue to debate whether Second Thessalonians was written by Paul or by pseudonym. The position that the letter is a late imitation is largely based on the comparison of the parallel expressions of the two epistles to the Thessalonians. There are more words and phrases that are repeated between these two letters than there are in any other two New Testament letters. William Wrede¿s study is the ultimate source of scholarly perception of these parallels. Not only does Wrede locate some exact parallels, he also finds definite words, verses, and related passages that precisely mirror and reject their counterparts in First Thesallonians. Scholars who conclude that Second Thessalonians is pseudonymous owe much of that conclusion to Wrede¿s work. Wreder¿s order of the Greek parallels has been reproduced with his original annotations in this translation.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 132 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -The Gospel of Matthew encourages and inspires its audience to practice the true, authentic, and holistic worship required for believers in Jesus to live in the kingdom of heaven. In accordance with all that Jesus taught and exemplified regarding authentic worship, believers are invited to complement their worship of God by worshiping and praying to Jesus as God¿s beloved Son, who represents ¿God with us.¿ They are also invited to complement their ritualistic worship, especially the baptism and Eucharist instituted for them by Jesus, with an ethical worship that extends to others, especially to disciples, children, and ¿the least ones¿ with whom Jesus identifies himself, the mercy God desires for a holistic worship. Indeed, a compassionate mercy toward all is the distinctive and noteworthy hallmark that characterizes the theme of worship in the kingdom of heaven, according to the Gospel of Matthew.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 206 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -Unity is the categorical imperative of the church. It is not just the church's bene esse, but its esse. In addition to being a theological concept, unity has become a raison d'etre of various structures that the church has established and developed. All of these structures are supposed to serve the end of unity. However, from time to time some of them deviate from their initial purpose and contribute to disunity. This happens because the structures of the church are not a part of its nature and can therefore turn against it. They are like scaffolding, which facilitates the construction and maintenance of a building without actually being part of it. Likewise, ecclesial structures help the church function in accordance with its nature but should not be identified with the church proper. This book considers the evolution of some of these church structures and evaluates their correspondence to their initial rationale. It focuses on particular structures that have developed in the eastern part of the Christian oecumene, such as patriarchates, canonical territory, and autocephaly, all of which are explored in the more general frame of hierarchy and primacy. They were selected because they are most neuralgic in the life of the Orthodox churches today and bear in them the greatest potential to divide.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 274 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -While serious studies of the Bible¿s rhetoric have been written for academic readers . . . few have attempted to examine the persuasiveness of speeches directly assigned to the biblical ¿God¿ that so many believe in and worship . . . Further, no critic has yet tried to analyze how this God tries to invent and develop His arguments in the Bible as it has come down to us, or how this God arranges those arguments, or the styles He adopts to make them, and the roles memory and delivery play in His arguments . . . Eloquence Divine is one agnostic¿s attempt at such a study. Th ose in the humanities, educators and their students, graduates and undergraduates, interested in rhetoric, persuasive language, religion, and the Bible are the ones most likely to be interested in this book¿s explorations . . . in the hope that [these] readers, whatever their beliefs or theoretical preferences, can gain greater understanding of how one, a fairly popular version of God strives through His eloquence to affect the human audiences in the Bible. - From the IntroductionBooks on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 276 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -The Cappadocian Fathers had great influence on the church of the fourth century, having brought their passion for Christ and theological expertise to life in their ministry. Their work was not devoid of influence, including that of their immediate family members. Within their writings we uncover the lives of seven women, the Cappadocian Mothers, who may have had more influence on the theology of the church than previously believed. As the Cappadocians wrestle with the Christianization of the concept of deification, we find the women in their lives becoming models for their theological understanding. The lives of the women become points of intersection in the kenosis-theosis parabola. Not only are the Cappadocian Mothers uncovered in the texts, but they become models of an optimistic theology of restoration for all of humanity without constraint of gender.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 252 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -Sotiris Mitralexis offers a contemporary look at Maximus the Confessor¿s (580¿662 CE) understanding of temporality, logoi, and deification, through the perspective of contemporary philosopher and theologian Christos Yannaras, as well as John Zizioulas and Nicholas Loudovikos. Mitralexis argues that Maximus possesses both a unique theological ontology and a unique threefold theory of temporality: time, the Aeon, and the radical transformation of temporality and motion in an ever-moving repose. With these three distinct modes of temporality, a Maximian theory of time can be reconstructed, which can be approached via his teaching on the logoi and deification. In this theory, time is not merely measuring ontological motion, but is more particularly measuring a relationship, the consummation of which effects the transformation of time into a dimensionless present devoid of temporal, spatial, and generally ontological distance ¿ thereby manifesting a perfect communion-in-otherness. In examining Maximian temporality, the book is not focussing on only one aspect of Maximus¿ comprehensive Weltanschauung, but looks at the Maximian vision as a whole through the lens of temporality and motion.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 256 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -Boston Congregationalist ministers Charles Chauncy (1705-1787) and Jonathan Mayhew (1720-1766) were significant political as well as religious leaders in colonial and revolutionary New England. Scholars have often stressed their influence on major shifts in New England theology, and have also portrayed Mayhew as an influential preacher, whose works helped shape American revolutionary ideology, and Chauncy as an active leader of the patriot cause. Through a deeply contextualised re-examination of the two ministers as ¿men of their times¿, Oakes offers a fresh, comparative interpretation of how their religious and political views changed and interacted over decades. The result is a thoroughly revised reading of Chauncy¿s and Mayhew¿s most innovative ideas. Conservative Revolutionaries unearths strongly traditionalist elements in their belief systems, focussing on their shared commitment to a dissenting worldview based on the ideals of their Protestant New England and British heritage. Oakes concludes with a provocative exploration of how their shifting theological and political positions may have helped redefine prevailing notions of human identity, capability, and destiny.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 318 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -Christos Yannaras (born 1935 in Athens, Greece) has been proclaimed ¿without doubt the most important living Greek Orthodox theologian¿ (Andrew Louth), ¿contemporary Greece¿s greatest thinker¿ (Olivier Clément), ¿one of the most significant Christian philosophers in Europe¿ (Rowan Williams). However, until recently the English speaking scholar did not have first-hand access to the main bulk of his work: in spite of the relatively early English translation of his The Freedom of Morality (1984), most of his books appeared in English fairly recently ¿ such as Person and Eros (2007), Orthodoxy and the West (2006), Relational Ontology (2011) or The Schism in Philosophy (2015). In this volume, chapters shall examine numerous aspects of Yannaras¿ contributions to Orthodox theology, philosophy and political thought, based on his relational ontology of the person, later popularised in the Anglophone sphere by John Zizioulas. From political theology to Heidegger and the philosophy of language, from Yannaras¿ critique of religion to the patristic grounding of the theology of the person and from Orthodoxy to the West, this volume comprises a panorama of Christos Yannaras¿ transdisciplinary contributions.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 280 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -Protestant ethics has often been associated with work and duty, excluding sensuality, sexuality and other pleasures. In an age of body worship as well as body loathing, Elisabeth Gerle explores new paths, embarking on a conversation with Martin Luther in dialogue with contemporary theologians on attitudes towards desire, ethics and politics. She draws on Eros theology to challenge traditional Lutheran stereotypes, such as the dichotomies between different forms of love, as well as between spirit and body.Gerle argues that Luther¿s spiritual breakthrough, where grace and gifts of creation became central, provides new meaning to sex and desire as well as to work, body and ordinary life. Women are seen in a new light ¿ as companions, autonomous ethical agents, part of the priesthood of all. This had revolutionary consequences in Europe at the time, and it represents a challenge to contemporary theologies with a nostalgic appetite for austerity, asceticism and female submission. Luther¿s erotic and genderfluid language is a healthy challenge to oppressive political structures centred on greed, profit and competition. A revised Scandinavian creation theology and a deep sense of the incarnational mystery are resources for contemporary theology and ethics.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 336 pp. Englisch.
