Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - For almost 100 years, the quarrying of sandstone was a major industry in Orleans County in Western NY. At its peak about 50 quarries employed upwards of 2000 people to mine a unique variety of Medina sandstone. This book explores the geology of how and when the stone was formed, the rise and fall of the regional quarry industry and what remains today. Vintage quarry photos from the early 1900's give incite into the products, work conditions, methods and equipment used to quarry the stone. The experiences of some of the many immigrants who toiled in the quarries are presented along with photos of stone structures that remain as prominent reminders of a bygone era. An extensive list of references used in preparing this book is also included.…

He talks of aggression and greed resulting from falsehoods: "A suspicion has been intimated that the hostility of the Indian tribes was excited by British influence… no proof has been offered to us… [making] a nation to become an unjust aggressor… our conduct towards those tribes been often oppressive and unjust, and have we not indulged an eager desire to obtain possession of their lands, when we had already millions of acres which we could neither cultivate nor dispose of?" "We are not to forget what we owe to others… claims even of an enemy should be impartially examined. If upon such examination, we are convinced that war is necessary we shall be justified… to support it. But if we discover that our opinions…have been erroneous… we have the strongest motives… to relinquish them." "In times of party zeal and public commotion it may be difficult on some occasions to discern what is right. But I hope… attention to the duties imposed on us by our national and state constitutions… in this perplexing period, preserve consistency of conduct and adhere with undeviating constancy to the principles of justice and truth."
