Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - This book was written during the American Reconstruction era as a direct response to a popular pamphlet by 'Ariel' (Buckner Payne). While Payne claimed that Black people were soulless 'beasts' who sneaked onto Noah's Ark, and other scholars like Drs. Young and Blackie offered counter-replies, Stephenson used his book to establish a specific racial hierarchy using both the Bible and geology. The Adamic Race is an 1868 historical book authored under the initials 'M.S.' by North Georgia geologist and mining engineer Matthew Fleming Stephenson. The book acts as a pseudoscientific and theological text that uses biblical interpretations and geological theories to argue for the 'pre-Adamite theory'-the concept that multiple distinct species of humans were created before Adam.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - The Conservation of Races by W. E. B. Du Bois is one of the foundational essays of African American intellectual history. Originally delivered as a speech before the American Negro Academy in 1897, this seminal work presents Du Bois's groundbreaking reflections on race, identity, and collective destiny. In this essay, Du Bois challenges simplistic notions of racial difference and argues that race, far from being a mere biological category, is a spiritual and cultural force that shapes the progress of civilization. He calls for the preservation-or 'conservation'-of the distinct gifts and contributions of African-descended peoples as essential to the advancement of humanity. Through his eloquent reasoning and moral clarity, Du Bois sets forth a vision of racial unity, self-determination, and intellectual pride that would inspire generations of Black thinkers and activists.A cornerstone of Pan-African and sociological thought, The Conservation of Races remains a vital text for understanding Du Bois's philosophy of race and his lifelong commitment to equality and cultural integrity.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - The Ebers Papyrus, also known as Papyrus Ebers, is an Egyptian medical papyrus of herbal knowledge dating to circa 1550 BC. Among the oldest and most important medical papyri of ancient Egypt, it was purchased at Luxor in the winter of 1873-74 by Georg Ebers. It is currently kept at the library of the University of Leipzig, in Germany. The Ebers Papyrus is written in hieratic Egyptian writing and represents the most extensive and best-preserved record of ancient Egyptian medicine known. The scroll contains some 700 magical formulas and folk remedies. It contains many incantations meant to turn away disease-causing demons and there is also evidence of a long tradition of empiricism. The papyrus contains a 'treatise on the heart'. It notes that the heart is the center of the blood supply, with vessels attached for every member of the body. Mental disorders are detailed in a chapter of the papyrus called the Book of Hearts. Disorders such as depression and dementia are covered. The descriptions of these disorders suggest that Egyptians conceived of mental and physical diseases in much the same way. The papyrus contains chapters on contraception, diagnosis of pregnancy and other gynecological matters, intestinal disease and parasites, eye and skin problems, dentistry and the surgical treatment of abscesses and tumors, bone-setting and burns. The 'channel theory' was prevalent at the time of writing of the Ebers papyrus; it suggested that unimpeded flow of bodily fluids is a prerequisite for good health. It may be a considered a precursor of ancient Greek humoral pathology and the subsequently established theory of the four humors, providing a historical connection between Ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, and medieval medicine.…

Lee is a powerful and tragic novel that delves into the painful realities of race, identity, and forbidden love in 19th-century America. Centered on Octavia, a woman of mixed heritage caught between two worlds, the novel explores the social and moral conflicts surrounding slavery, colorism, and the rigid racial boundaries of the antebellum South.Through vivid characterization and emotional depth, Lee exposes the cruelty of racial injustice and the human cost of systemic oppression. The novel's dramatic portrayal of love constrained by prejudice serves as both a social critique and a deeply personal story of courage, longing, and loss.Originally published during an era of intense racial division, Octavia: The Octoroon remains a significant early contribution to the literature addressing race and identity in America. It continues to resonate as a haunting exploration of humanity, inequality, and resilience.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - The Right of American Slavery is a controversial nineteenth-century political and philosophical tract by T. W. Hoit that presents an argument in defense of the institution of slavery in the United States. Written during the height of national debate over slavery, the work reflects the ideological positions used to justify bondage on legal, moral, and social grounds.Hoit constructs his case by appealing to constitutional interpretation, historical precedent, and prevailing racial theories of the era. The text provides modern readers with a clear example of pro-slavery reasoning, offering insight into the arguments that abolitionists sought to dismantle and the moral conflict that divided the nation. As a historical document, The Right of American Slavery is valuable for understanding the intellectual landscape of nineteenth-century America. Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Rachel: A Play in Three Acts by Angelina Weld Grimké is one of the earliest known plays written by an African American woman and one of the first to openly confront the realities of racism in the United States. First performed in 1916 and published in 1920, this groundbreaking work was originally written as a response to D. W. Griffith's racist film The Birth of a Nation and was intended to awaken national awareness of the cruelty of racial prejudice.Set in the early 20th century, the play follows Rachel Loving, a young Black woman whose compassion and sensitivity lead her to grapple with the moral pain of raising children in a racist society. Through Rachel's inner conflict and her relationships with family and community, Grimké explores themes of motherhood, love, racial trauma, and moral resistance. With its powerful emotional depth and social critique, Rachel stands as a landmark of African American drama and early feminist literature. Grimké's work remains a vital contribution to both theatrical history and the long struggle for racial and gender equality.…
