Ajouter au panierFirst editions in contemporary calf. The first British bird book illustrated with hand-coloured plates. 'Little is known of Albin's [c.1680-c.1742] early life, though he was probably born in Germany to a family named Weiss. By 1708 he had changed his surname to Albin and was living in London with his family. His profession of art teacher led him to the close observation of the natural world, reinforced by painting work which he undertook for the naturalist Joseph Dandridge (1665â"1747), who collected insects and observed their metamorphosis from egg to fly. He also drew natural-history subjects for Sir Hans Sloane, before gaining the patronage of the Dowager Duchess of Beaufort', who encouraged him to publish a book on insects (Royal Collection trust). 'For the most part Albin delineated one bird per plate. The birds are placed on a branch or on the ground, each part coloured. The proportions of the birds are a distinct improvement on those in Willoughby and Ray. Albin produced his paints in a rather strange manner according to Petiver's account. For his reds he washed and dried vermilion pigment in four waters and then proceeded to "grind it in boys urine three times, yn [then] gum arabic it and grind it in Brandy wine." Whatever his methods and however singular the contribution by his sons, this very first effort at colouring plates depicting birds is highly commendable and the results were gratifying, for the book was popular' (Jackson, Bird Etchings). First editions; 3 vols, 8vo (28.5 x 22 cm); 306 hand-coloured engraved plates, variable spotting & offsetting, first plate of vol. II repaired with tape and slight loss from the lower edge of the image, plates 32 & 60 of vol. II trimmed just into the image, plates 36-39 with small stain in a blank portion, repaired closed tear to plates 103 & 104, light marginal dampstain to a few leaves of text, in vol. III plate trimmed just into the caption and a few others trimmed closely; contemporary mottled calf rebacked to style, red & green morocco labels, spines gilt in compartments, double gilt fillets, marbled endpapers, red speckled edges, bindings rubbed with some wear at the corners, very good condition. Printer's ornament on letter-press title. Quarter calf with tips bound to style in the 18th century over comb marbled paper boards. Spine with five raised gilt-ruled bands forming six compartments with gilt red morocco lettering-piece in second and gilt acorn center tool in rest, fore-edge and bottom margins uncut First edition of William Halfpenny's influential book of 18th-century architectural plans, complete with all 47 engravings. William Halfpenny was an English architect in the first half of the 18th century, whose earliest known project was the Holy Church Trinity in Leeds (1723). But Halfpenny's main importance lies in his prolific writing and publishing of pattern books. His books are focused on the practical information a builder or carpenter would need, but he also positioned the works to "gentleman draughtsmen" intent on designing their own houses. Halfpenny's influential books were often the blue-print for 18th-century American houses and their detailing, including Mount Clare in Baltimore County, Maryland, and the Chase-Lloyd House in Annapolis, Maryland. This book's engravings by Richard Parr after Halfpenny are beautifully presented and assiduously described in the text. Halfpenny's first intention for Compleat System, as he suggests in the preface, "was to publish only fifteen designs for small edifices; but the approbation that these received from friends, such as Robert Morris, encouraged him to add sixteen more designs for progressively larger houses." [Harris] Also important to Halfpenny was accessibility. He produced "eminently affordable pattern books, complete with dimensions and estimates, expressly intended to enable 'workmen at a distance from the Metropolis' to erect all manner of rural buildings in a wide variety of materials and in all the latest fashions at little cost." [ODNB] The book's final, and perhaps most attractive plate, which depicts Westminster Bridge and is unrelated to the rest of the work, was included in response to the controversies over the bridge at that time. [Full collation available.] With 101 hand-colored etched-engraved plates, plus the subscriber's inventory of plates (not filled in) tipped in to the recto of pl. 1. Bound in contemporary green morocco, with a gilt roll border and gilt urn corner-ornaments to the boards. Spine divided into six "panels." Title gilt to red morocco in the second "panel." Guiloche gilt to red morocco in the fourth "panel." Gilt fillet to the edges of the boards. Gilt inside dentelle. Marbled end-papers. Edges of the text-block spotted red. Boards starting at the tail. Fore-corners bumped and worn. Scattered scuffing and spotting. Two plates with a closed tears, repaired. Infrequent foxing. Altogether a nice copy. Albin (d. 1742) is something of a shadowy figure -- if an indisputably important one -- in British natural history illustration. Perhaps of German extraction, Albin nevertheless insinuated himself with the British aristocracy. The Birds was dedicated to Sir Robert Abdy, third Baronet of Albyns (whence, perhaps, Albin drew his English name). Abdy's connections allowed Albin access to the collections of the Duke of Chandos and Joseph Dandridge. Indeed, so much did his ambit of specimens expand, and so successful was this first venture, that he would print two further volumes (1734, 1738) bringing the total number of plates to 306. William Derham (1657-1735) is best known for his 1696 Artificial Clockmaker, the great English book on watches. He was the first to measure the speed of sound (with apologies to Sir Isaac) and a theologian besides. Derham's name would be listed on the title-page of later editions; in the present state his name only appears above his additional observations (Cc1). He had previously collaborated with Albin on his book of English insects -- rather impressive credentials for someone not generally associated with biological sciences. Here begins the great tradition of books of colored engravings of birds that would flourish in Britain for nearly another two centuries, achieving its pinnacle with Gould and Audubon. The origins are humble; only 89 sets of colored plates were delivered to the subscribers (including the Duke of Devonshire, Lord Chief Justice Eyre and Sir Hans Sloane; the presence of the checklist of plates, issued separately, obviously implies that this is a subscriber's copy). The book does not claim to be exhaustive or authoritative; indeed, Albins asks readers to pitch in: "I shall be very thankful to any Gentleman that will be pleased to send any curious Birds (which shall be drawn and graved for the second Volume.)" (A3v). BM(NH) p. 25; Mengel 33; Mullens & Swann pp. 8-9; Nissen IVB 14; Sitwell, Fine Bird Books p. 71.…

Ajouter au panier12mo., pp. [2], 286, [2, advertisements]; a few stains but generally a very good copy in nineteenth-century half dark brown morocco and marbled boards, a little worn.First edition in English, originally published in French in the Hague in 1734-5. This is the second of the two important novels by Marivaux, which broke new ground in the art of writing fiction. 'Where La Vie de Marianne belongs to the moralizing and sentimental romance tradition, Le Paysan is a cynical comic novel of the way of the world, though both stories are full of subtle psychological observations. The tale is told in later life by the unashamed and good-humoured hero Jacob, who has risen from his peasant origins to a wealthy and respectable position as a tax-farmer thanks to his resourceful wit and his physical attractions. He profits amorally from the affections of a series of (usually older) women, some of them with reputations for piety; these adventures are recounted in a spirited style, with a sharp eye for the hypocrisy of the respectable' (New Oxford Companion to Literature in French). The work bears some affinities to the novels of Richardson, and to Fielding's Joseph Andrews, works that were to transform English fiction in the course of the next decade. This anonymous translation contains the first four parts only of the French text; a fifth part appeared in 1735, and an anonymous continuation in three further parts in 1736, but these later parts were not translated at the time.McBurney 307.
