Ajouter au panierFirst Edition. Full Description: DONNE, John. Poems, By J.D. With Elegies on the Authors Death. London: M.F. [Miles Fletcher] for John Marriot, 1633. [BOUND WITH]: Juvenilia, or Certaine Paradoxes and Problemes. London: E.P. [Elizabeth Purslowe] for Henry Seyle, 1633. First edition of the collected poems of the greatest of the m…etaphysical poets, bound with a first edition of his "perfectly impudent" Juvenilia. Small quarto (7 1/8 x 5 1/8 inches; 180 x 130 mm). [10], 406, [2, blank]; 62 pp. Both volumes bound without A1 blanks, but Poems retains the final blank. Poems with the first state of leaf Nni, (pg 273) with no running title and 35 lines of text. Several lines in the Satyres on pages 330, 331 and 341, originally containing lines offensive to the king and church, are left blank. In Juvenilia, the license granted by Herbert printed twice (leaf F1v and H4v). Woodcut printer's device on title, woodcut and typographic head- and tailpieces, and woodcut initials. Contemporary calf, rebacked, with original spine laid down. Spine stamped in gilt. Red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Some chipping and scuffing to boards. Some pale dampstaining to title and preliminaries in Poems. Poems with some very small marginal discoloration to the edges of leaves from signature Ccc to the end of the work, not affecting text. Overall a very good copy of this most desirable literary landmark. This first edition of the Poems was based on manuscripts derived from the author's papers and provided the best 17th-century text of Donne's verses. Although his poetry was circulated in small bundles of manuscript copies among the cultured circles of Elizabethan and Jacobean society, Donne deliberately kept most of it out of print, fearing to tarnish his reputation in the religious establishment. Thus, almost none of his poetry appeared in print during his lifetime. "The first editors of Donne's poetry divided his work into about a dozen groupings. The Songs and Sonnets which open the volume are generally amorous in theme; the Divine Poems, which close it, are described in their title. Early scholars took for granted that all the bawdy, cynical and lecherous poems were written by young Jack Donne, while all the somber, penitent, devotional poems were written by the godly divine. The more we learn about the matter, the less this easy division seems to stand up. The poetry of Donne represents a sharp break with that written by his predecessors and most of his contemporaries. Whether he writes of love or devotion, Donne's particular blend of wit and seriousness, of intense feeling, darting thought, and vast erudition, creates a fascination quite beyond the reach of easier styles and less strenuous minds" (Adams). "With Donne begins a new era in the history of the English love lyric. The spirit of his best love poetry passed into the most interesting of his elegies and his religious verses, the influence of which was. perhaps even greater, than that of his songs" (Rosenbach 30:127). The Juvenilia consist of "bits of logical horseplay, loaded with legal aphorisms perversely applied, and perfectly impudent in their cheerful, brassy assurance"' (Adams). "Owing to their rather free nature they could not be published during Donne's lifetime" (Keynes, 93). Keynes 78, 43. STC 7045, 7043. Grolier 100 25. Pforzheimer 296. Hayward 54. HBS 68863. $55,000.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Fine. THIRD EDITION. (first ed. 1633). A very desirable copy, bound in its original binding of polished calf, ruled in blind, with only minor wear and abrasions. The text is in very fine condition and is complete with the portrait of Donne -now rarely encountered- by William Marshall, apparently after a lost mi…niature by Hillyard, showing Donne as a rakish young man of eighteen, with long hair and an earring in his right ear. Beneath the portrait is a poem by Izaak Walton. Provenance: Richard Jennings (Sotheby's London, 28 April 1952, lot 162) - Allerton C. Hickmott, acquired by Seven Gables, 1962. "The poetry of Donne represents a sharp break with that written by his predecessors and most of his contemporaries. Much Elizabethan verse is decorative and flowery in its quality. Its images adorn; its meter is mellifluous. Image harmonizes with image, and line swells almost predictably into line. Donne's poetry, on the other hand, is written very largely in conceits- concentrated images that involve an element of dramatic contrast, of strain, or of intellectual difficulty. Most of the traditional 'flowers of rhetoric' disappear completely. For instance, in his love poetry one never encounters bleeding hearts, cheeks like roses, lips like cherries, teeth like pearls, or Cupid shooting arrows of love. The tears which flow in A Valediction: of Weeping, are different from, and more complex than, the ordinary saline fluid of unhappy lovers; they are ciphers, naughts, symbols of the world's emptiness without the beloved; or else, suddenly reflecting her image, they are globes, worlds, they contain the sum of things. The poet who plays with conceits not only displays his own ingenuity; he may see into the nature of the world as deeply as the philosopher. Donne's conceits in particular leap continually in a restless orbit from the personal to the cosmic and back again. "Donne's rhythms are colloquial and various. He likes to twist and distort not only ideas, but also metrical patterns and grammar itself. In the satires, which Renaissance writers understood to be 'harsh' and 'crabbed' as a genre, Donne's distortions often threaten to choke off the stream of expression entirely. But in the lyrics (both those which are worldly and those which are religious in theme), as in the elegies and sonnets, the verse never fails of a complex and memorable melody. Donne had an unusual gift, rather like that of a modern poet, T.S. Eliot, for striking off phrases that ring in the mind like a silver coin. They are two masters of the colloquial style, removed alike from the dignified, weighty manner of Milton and the sugared sweetness of the Elizabethans. "Donne and his followers are known to literary history as the 'metaphysical school' of poets. Strictly speaking, this is a misnomer; there was no organized group of poets who imitated Donne, and if there had been, they would not have called themselves 'metaphysical' poets. That term was invented by Dryden and Dr. Johnson. But the influence of Donne's poetic style was widely felt, especially by men whose taste was formed before 1660. George Herbert, Richard Crashaw, Henry Vaughan, Andrew Marvell, and Abraham Cowley are only the best known of those on whom Donne's influence is recognizable. The great change of taste that took place in 1660 threw Donne and the 'conceited' style out of fashion; during the 18th and 19th centuries both he and his followers were rarely read and still more rarely appreciated. Finally, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, three new editions of Donne appeared, of which Sir H.J.C. Grierson's, published in 1912, was quickly accepted as standard. By clarifying and purifying the often-garbled text, Grierson did a great deal to make Donne's poetry more available to the modern reader. Almost at once it started to exert an influence on modern poetic practice, the modern poets being hungry for a 'tough' style that would free them form the worn-out rhetoric of the late 19th century romanticism. And Donne's status among the.

A very good copy; title page within ruled border, closed paper tear to reverse, light reading wear, minor marks; bound in tree calf boards, recently re-backed over raised bands with red label. Little is known of Richard Maden, apart from the fact… that he was a middle-Church Evangelical Anglican, and this appears to be the sole work published by him. He was Vicar of St. Helen s, Bishopsgate from 1635-1639 during which time this work was printed. Although there is no copy of this title in the Lambeth Palace library, there is a MS dated 1638 held there titled London Tithes Case which is a record of the returns made by London parishesa list of the householders showing the rentals paid for the houses plus the incumbents and their income. Here is listed St. Helen Bishopsgate [Richard Maden] ff.131-2.

Ajouter au panierFIRST EDITION, Third Printing. 190 x 143 mm. (7 1/2 x 5 1/2"). 3 p.l., 129, [1] pp. Pleasing retrospective panelled calf tooled in blind, raised bands, gilt lettering. Allegorical frontispiece by William Marshall. Wing Q-115; ESTC R218365. ?Leaves faintly browned at edges, a few small stains, a couple quires with short wormtrail… to gutter margin, but an excellent copy, clean and fresh internally, in an unworn sympathetic binding. Written by an author whom DNB calls "probably the most successful English poet of his age," this work of allegorical eclogues has been largely overlooked by modern scholarship, and is ripe for reevaluation. The very pious Francis Quarles (1592-1644) began publishing religious poetry in 1620, with his greatest success being "Emblems" (1635), inspired by the Continental fashion for emblem books intended to facilitate Christian contemplation. Although mostly forgotten now, Quarles was celebrated in his day; Horace Walpole famously quipped that "Milton was forced to wait till the world had done admiring Quarles." DNB explains that the present work, written in the 1630s but not published until after the author's death, "deals with autobiographical, political, and religious matters under the thin guise of pastoral allegory. The poem includes satirical attacks on the radical fringe of the anti-episcopal 'Root and Branch' party, also allegorical portraits of [Quarles'] friend, Phineas Fletcher, and an Arminian 'Master Shepheard' who is severely criticized and must be Archbishop Laud." The text is preceded by a wonderful allegorical frontispiece depicting the Tree of Religion being attacked on all sides: men with axes chop down its limbs, a Jesuit strips its bark, a group of sectarians dig up its roots, and a gentleman holding a gun and two impaled books labelled "Liturgy" and "Cannons" aims for the branches. Defending the tree is a cleric with a pitcher of water, King Charles I in full armor, and a large, disembodied hand with a sword reaching down from the sky. In addition to its literary merits, this work also holds historical value; as DNB reminds us, "Nearly all ofQuarles'works stand in an interesting relationship to public affairs and serve to enrich the picture of Stuart England." Our first edition is a difficult book to find, especially, as here, in agreeable condition.

I missed the discipline and blessing of preparation so tried to think of a Bible book which I had not heard preached on for a long time and was unli…kely to do so soon. I thought of Leviticus. At about the same time some were saying that if I would not be preaching, would I write for them. So the work began to change from something done simply for my own benefit. All the time I have written with the kind of people in mind that I have met in the congregations to which I have preached.
