A scarce first edition. Rebound in a modern elegant half calf binding with gilt lettering, by Maltbys. Complete with a half title page, dedication page and glossary. An interesting natural and agricultural history of peat-moss or turf-bog, with details on the qualities of peat for agriculture, the methods used in Scotland for converting moss soils into arable and pasture grounds, and plantations of trees. The information included is presented both in the form of essays and from correspondence with numerous experts. Written by Andrew Steele, of Crosswoodhill, a member of the natural history and agricultural societies of Edinburgh. With a presentation ink inscription to the title page reading 'Lt. Col. Eardle.from Captain A. Duff R.N'. With a bookplate for one, 'Peter M. Scott', to the front paste-down. Rebound in quarter calf. Externally, excellent with little shelf wear. Bookplate to the front paste-down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with light spotting and handling marks throughout. Gift inscription to the title page. Light age-toning to the edges. Pages are roughly cut. Near Fine. book.

His RUDIMENTS was the standard 18th-century Latin grammar and while keeper to the Advocates' library he acquired an "unrivalled collection of early Scottish books" (ODNB). He was also a fierce Jacobite, engaging his press and his pen in various pamphlet wars. This LIFE, by noted economist George Chalmers, includes a list of works from Ruddiman's press. Later half calf and green boards; front joint starting. Bookplates of A.N.L. Munby and Hugh W. Young. 2 pp of annotations in pencil to recto of ffep and first (binder's) blank in modern hand.
