Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. London: Printed by A.C. for John Martyn Printer for the Royal Society, 1678. First English Edition. Folio, a good copy in contemporary English calf, with a historic reback to the spine. Contemporary ink and pencil annotation and some correction throughout. Collated and complete. Plate XXVII with an engraving of the Dodo. Some closed tears to the base or top of the plates, one plate repaired. First English edition of the first modern Ornithology, and 'one of the most important treatises on ornithology of all time' (Wood). It was translated and adapted from the Latin text of 1676 by John Ray, who added three additional plates and the three discourses on fowling, song birds, and falconry at the end. This work, begun jointly by Willughby and Ray and completed by Ray after the former's death in 1672, revolutionised ornithological taxonomy by organising species according to their physical characteristics. 'An important feature of the book was to be the engraved figures of birds, the cost being contributed by Willughby's widow. The Ornithologia, dated on the title page 1676 and carrying the arms of the Royal Society, if regarded only as a piece of book production, is magnificent. With its historical importance added it becomes one of the fairest monuments that mark the progress of scientific natural history' (Keynes p 54). As Keynes notes, the Latin edition was largely the work of Ray, as Willughby had died in 1672 and had left only rough field notes towards his ornithology. Ray effectively wrote the entire work, utilising not only Willughby's material but that of his own and other naturalists, and he provided the taxonomic system. The plates [numbered I to LXVIII], numbered XII, XXII and XLV are signed by F. H. van Houe, XXXVIIII, XLIIII signed by W. Faithorne, and XLVIII signed by W. Sherwin; the others are unsigned. Provenance: crest to the front board. Approximately 14 inches tall. Hooke counted devices [described in the present volume] among his greatest mechanical achievements. [.] What distinguished Hooke's instruments, indeed, was the fact that they were 'convenient and manageable,' together with the real advances they made. [.] The most spectacular of Hooke's complex scientific instruments, his equatorial quadrant, is described in detail -- with a glorious illustration -- in his Animadversions (the book in which he publicly attacked Hevelius's rejection of instrumental aids for astronomy.) [.] An equatorial quadrant allows the observer to follow the motion of a heavenly body by pushing his instrument around the axis: 'but Hooke goes further and has a machine do the pushing.'" (Quoted from Lisa Jardine's The Curious Life of Robert Hooke, London: Harper Collins, 2003, page 44ff.) Robert Hooke was an English polymath who was active as a physicist ("natural philosopher"), astronomer, geologist, meteorologist and architect. He is credited as one of the first scientists to investigate living things at microscopic scale in 1665, using a compound microscope that he designed. Hooke was an impoverished scientific inquirer in young adulthood who went on to become one of the most important scientists of his time. After the Great Fire of London in 1666, Hooke (as a surveyor and architect) attained wealth and esteem by performing more than half of the property line surveys and assisting with the city's rapid reconstruction. Often vilified by writers in the centuries after his death, his reputation was restored at the end of the twentieth century and he has been called "England's Leonardo [da Vinci]". Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. Rebound in contemporary library style binding of full brown cloth with gilt titles, with new endpapers. The binding seems very recent and is in fine condition. Although there are no ex library signs, this copy was owned and likely rebound by the New York Botanical Gardens, as there are about 5 stamps within the text. The contents are at least good, reasonably clean although there is some undelining to the text of perhaps a dozen pages. With 499 pages plus a catalogue of 115 pages. There are 3 engraved plates, two of which are folding, with some tears to the folds, one of them has some losses to the folded edge. Lacking another engraved plate ( I think ).…

Ajouter au panierSecond edition. Scarce. Collation: A-L12 [lacks one blank at end]. Pagination: [2], 256p. Contemporary calf, gilt rules at edges, rebacked, gilt title label on spine, hinges cracked but previously repaired. Small stain at inner margin of title, few leaves trimmed close at top, no affect, few minor foxing spots, else a near fine copy. Sprat, Thomas (bap. 1635, d. 1713), bishop of Rochester. "The council's [Royal Society]interventions were a response to Samuel Sorbière's Relation d'un voyage en Angleterre (May 1664). While generally complimentary to the Royal Society (of which he was a fellow), Sorbière criticized certain English institutions and implicitly challenged England's leadership in natural philosophy. Charles II forbade the Royal Society to answer the Relation. None the less, conscious that a failure to reply might jeopardize the society's prestige and support, Sprat set aside the History to write the very critical and unfair Observations on Monsieur de Sorbier's ?Voyage into England? (1665), addressed as a letter to Christopher Wren. Sprat twisted Sorbière's comments to permit a more vehement defence. He challenged Sorbière's sketch of Hobbes and Bacon, emphasizing the differences between dogmatism and experimentalism, while privileging the society's Baconian methods. Sprat may have intended to distance the society from Hobbes, whose views were close to those of a number of fellows and had the potential to damage the society's reputation. He also denied that the society relied on books or on any modern authority, such as Pierre Gassendi or René Descartes. Sprat also challenged Sorbière's criticisms of England's mercantile policies. In both the Observations and the History Sprat was conspicuously silent concerning the scientific Montfort Academy in Paris, officially established in 1657, and thus a challenge to the Royal Society's chronological primacy and England's leadership. Sorbière's Relation may also have pushed Sprat to write the contentious third part of the History, apparently wholly drafted after this episode, and possibly not overseen by Wilkins or the council. The Observations, extensive comments on English religion and politics, thus help to place the History in context." [-ODNB]. Citations: ESTC: R16773. Wing S5046.…
