''The Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity was Hooker's response to a rift within Protestantism—between Hooker's Anglicanism and English Puritans agitating for a reform of church government toward the Calvinist model, characterized by an exclusive fidelity to scripture—and also to what he saw as the Catholic Church's theological error of elevating "tradition" to the same importance as scripture. Hooker articulated a three-fold theory of ecclesiastical government that emphasized deference to scripture, followed by church tradition. Where those were inadequate, answers were to be sought in human reason. The Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity has been lauded as the Enlightenment's ".first glimmering.dawn," and profoundly influential upon " (both directly and through Locke), American political philosophy in the late 1700's."'' lxxxvii+517 paginated pages. By taking part in the making of a lavishly illustrated book, Campbell established a method of self-promotion for an aspiring architect which was to last the century. Vitruvius Britannicus, a record of the principal private and public British buildings of the time, was prepared by a group of booksellers active in the print trade during 1714. At a fairly late stage in the preparation of this costly enterprise they appear to have employed Campbell to give a more up-to-date and specifically architectural slant to volumes which would otherwise have been of a more conventionally topographical character. Campbell was presented as the author on the title-page; he probably wrote the introduction as well as the brief text which accompanied the plates for each building. Most importantly, he was able to include many of his own (mostly unexecuted) designs. ODNB. Thomas Balbirnie (1816-1867) was an architect and surveyor. Thomas travelled to the United States in 1850 and was the architect for some several structures in the city of Baltimore, including the Madison Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church. CAMPBELL Ca. Ajouter au panierHardcover. First Edition. Later polished calf-backed boards with matching calf corners; [2], 467-507, [1]; 152; [2], 152 pages. A fascinating compilation of these three works. The first, an extract from a periodical, is a review of three works: THE AFRICAN SLAVE TRADE by Buxton; CORRESPONDENCE RELATING TO THE SLAVE TRADE presented to both Houses of Parliament, 1838-39; and ESCLAVAGE ET TRAITE by Agenor de Gasparin, 1838. The second, titled THE REMEDY without a proper title page and date but printed by W. Clowe & Sons, begins with the published introduction to the finished book but with variations in the text from the published version, starting in the very first paragraph. The third item has a proper title page and is also printed by W. Clowes & Sons with a statement at the bottom of the title page: "This Edition is not to be Published." It too differs from the published version and has slight differences from the other version included here. The purpose of the third item is revealed by Buxton in the preface to the published edition of THE REMEDY: "As the remedy I contemplate is now, for the first time, published, it is necessary to explain the reason why it has hitherto been withheld. In the spring of 1838, I stated to several members of the cabinet my views as to the suppression of the Slave Trade. I could not reasonably expect, that, in the extreme pressure of business during the sitting of Parliament, they would be able to find time to give it the consideration it required, I therefore prepared for the press and printed a few copies of my work--describing the horrors of the Slave Trade, and proposing a remedy, for the private use of the members of the administration, and placed these in their hands on the day that the session closed." This is certainly one of those copies and as such is quite scarce. What version the second item in this volume is remains a mystery, but clearly this is an early and scarce variant. Buxton believed that the only way to suppress the African slave trade was to promote "legitimate commerce" and that this new trade would launch Africa on the road to moral and material progress, a belief that eventually became conventional wisdom in mid-19th-century Britain. Paper split at front gutter but covers firm. Near Fine.…

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. Collection of 16 English republican pamphlets. Octavo. Contemporary Cambridge style calf, rebacked. 5 raised bands. Red leather spine label. Foxing, toning, marginal soiling. Contemporary signature of William Clark, 1780 London and later signature of Alfred Adams, 1828 on front flyleaf. Lynn Library bookplates to front pastedown. Pages trimmed close with minor loss to text of several pamphlets. During the Glorious Revolution, Republican pamphleteers were mostly silent, dominated by the Orangist propaganda. By 1690, however, the Tories were outspoken against William's foreign policy. Several prominent religious figures of the day, such as William Sherlock and Henry Gandy refused the oaths to William and Mary. The majority of these pamphlets would be sent to the Dutch Republic playing on fears that "William III was nothing more than an absolute monarch intent on increasing his power in the Dutch Republic as well." (Onnekink, Reinterpreting the Dutch Forty Years War, 1672-1713). The Weesil pamphlets deal with the Jacobite Rebellion and Williamite War in Ireland. Final two pamphlets deal with the Anglican Church. Contents include: [Shippen]. Faction display'd : a poem, 1704; [Anon]. The anti-Weesils. poem.
