The work is a monograph on the life and work of acclaimed Soviet Jewish theater actor and director Solomon Mikhoels (1890-1948) Mikhoels was the leading actor of the Moscow State Jewish T…heater company (established in 1920), and from 1928 until his death in 1948, he served as artistic director. The work covers the time from his early life through his work as leading actor of the company, is profusely illustrated throughout with b/w photographic reproductions of the actor in costume and makeup in various roles. Mikhoels was ultimatley assassinated, under the guise of an accidental traffic accident, by Stalin, and other member of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee (of which he served as chairman) were killed in 1952 during the infamous "Night of the Murdered Poets". Text in Russian. Wrappers with some light rubbing and chipping to extremities. Cover with light creasing. Interior with a closed tear to the right edge of the title page, and some minor to light stains and/or smudges to some pages throughout. Images unaffected. Wrappers in good+, inteiror in very good- condition overall. Scarce. Protected by modenr mylar. About the author: Mikhail Borisovich Zagorsky (?????? ????????? ?????????, 1885-1951) was a soviet playwright, theater critic and theater historian, who wrote extensively on various subject including Tarkhanov, Pushkin and Gogol among others.

Paul Wegener (1874-1948) was a German actor, screenwriter and film director. In 1912, he turned to the new medium of motion pictures and appeared in the 1913 version of The Stud…ent of Prague. It was while making this film that he first heard the old Jewish legend of the Golem and proceeded to adapt the story to film, co-directing and co-writing the script with Henrik Galeen. His first version of the tale The Golem (1915, now lost) was a success and firmly established Wegener's reputation. In 1917, he made a parody of the story called Der Golem und die Tänzerin, but it was his reworking of the tale, The Golem: How He Came into the World (1920) which stands as one of the classics of German cinema and helped to cement Wegener's place in cinematic history. Another of his early films was Der Yoghi (1916), in which he played the role of a yogi and young inventor, and which provided him with the opportunity to accommodate three of his interests, trick photography (it was one of the first films to feature invisibility), the supernatural and Eastern mysticism. Anatoli Ktorov (1898-1980) In 1925…Ktorov shot to fame with the leading role in the silent movie Zakroyshchik iz Torzhka (The Tailor from Torzhok) by director Yakov Protazanov. He also gave an impressive performance in Protazanov's Prazdnik svyatogo Yorgena (St. Jorgen's Day). He went on to star in many films throughout a long career.
