The book is xiii + 233 pages in length. Our copy is clean and appears unread, and is near fine condition. The dust jacket has some shelf wear, with two small tears. Photographs are available. "Revised and expanded, this volume deals with the religious traditions of ancient Egypt, which have come down to us in a state which is both extremely fragmentary and complex. New material - especially hymns collected in Theban tombs - now allows a much more precise allocation of religious texts and ideas in terms of time, place and social context. Within the field of solar religion, no less than five different traditions have to be distinguished: 1) the liturgical traditions of the royal solar cult, which for their secrecy and exclusivity are labelled the mysteries of the sun cult; 2) the traditional mythology of the solar course expressed in hymns and pictorial representations; 3) the revolutionary process culminating in the Amarna period, which discards the mythic images and gives a monotheistic construction of the solar course, a process which starts before Akhenaten's revolution; 4) the theology of Amun-Re, the God of Thebes, before the Amarna Period, a theology of primacy where one god acts as chief of a pantheon; and 5) the quite different theology of this same Amun-Re after Amarna, a theology which answers the monotheistic experience by developing a kind of pantheism - the concept of the hidden god - who is both cosmic god and personal saviour".…

"Scholars often assume that elite, or high-status tomb chapels of the Egyptian Old and Middle Kingdoms featured decorations in order to provide for the eternal needs of the deceased. However, this explanation often fails to account for the content of many such decorations". "The Cosmos of Khnumhotep II offers a detailed study of the tomb chapel of Khnumhotep II. Kamrin painstakingly charts the various levels of meaning buried in the scenes, ornaments, and texts that adorn Khnumhotep II's chapel, and provides a detailed analysis of the organizational structure of the tomb. She argues that the tomb chapel should be interpreted as a model of the cosmos, integrating the realms of the living and the dead. An abundance of new evidence suggests that various cult structures may be regarded as cosmograms, schematized representations of the Egyptian cosmos that reflect the powers and operations of the universe".…

The book is 235 pages in length, with 14 text figures of plans, and 96 black-and-white plates. This volume is a hard to find reprint of Herbert Winlock's exciting 1942, Excavations at Deir el-Bahri 1911-1931, but with a slightly altered title. It is a quite collectible publication. Our copy is unread, very clean, and in brand new condition. "This compelling book by a former Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York tells of his excavations over the course of twenty years at Deir el-Bahri, the site with which the woman Pharaoh Hatshepsut is most closely identified. Winlock conjures up a procession of vanished figures from Hatshepsut's court, Winlock also details the conditions and emotions surrounding archaeological fieldwork--the surges of optimism and despair, the exhilaration of an unexpected find." Hardcover. Etat : New. Etat de la jaquette : New. 1st Edition. Rare hardcover edition (Studies in Egyptology). Blue linen covered boards with gilt lettering along the spine. This landmark study is 269 pages in length, and features 117 black-and-white figures, which are on 72 plates gathered together at the rear of the volume. Our copy is in pristine, brand new condition. Photographs are available. "First published in 1988. The Theban private tombs form a major source for our knowledge of Egyptian society. Ostensibly a great amount of work has been done in the necropolis over the past one hundred and sixty years of its modern history, and the bibliography for this area is among the most extensive in Egyptology. Many of the 415 or so decorated tombs have received a full publication, but for a great number only selected scenes have been made available, and a surprising amount remains to all intents and purposes unpublished. The present study is concerned with a number of painted tombs of the Eighteenth dynasty which were visited by the early travellers, but the exact location of which is now unknown. The careful drawings and tracings made by these pioneers are apparently all that remains to show the appearance of these tombs. Some of the scenes represented are not found elsewhere in the necropolis, and others have special points of interest or unique details, linguistic, iconographic and religious, to offer. This very important material has not previously been used by scholars, and it has not been recognized that fragments of some of these vanished tombs can actually be traced to collections in museums and elsewhere".…
