Hardcover. Etat : Good. A nice-looking lot of different editions of the Sufi poet's best-loved, classic epic poem, and illustrated beautifully by a range of different artists and in multiple formats. The poet, Omar Khayyam (or Khayyami) was born, likely at Nishapur, in the Persian northeast, somewhere between about 1025 and 1050 A.D. His surname Khayyam means "tent-maker" in Persian, which might, like St. Paul/Saul, denote his father's vocation and major income-source. The bibliography consulted is Ambrose G. Potter, A Bibliography Of The Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam Together With Kindred Matter In Prose And Verse Pertaining Thereto, published by Ingpen and Grant, London, 1929. The lot is comprised of the following: 1) The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam [FitzGerald's Version], translated by Edward FitzGerald, and illustrated beautifully by Abanindro Nath Tagore. Ex-library, bound in quarto format, 12 1/2" tall x 9 1/2" wide, brown buckram cloth over boards, gilt-stamped title to spine, and complete with 12 plates tipped onto stiff, heavy cardboard plates at book's end. Toned tissue-protected, red title-captioned, and with considerable page-edge toning especially at rear. Former owner's bookplate, embossed library stamps, ink-stamped to all three edges, and scattered pencil-markings, slight waffling to text-block, still quite attractive; single page present but detached; printed by Eyre & Spottiswoode of London. The illustrator Abanindranath Tagore CIE (7 August 1871 ? 5 December 1951) was an Indian painter who was the principal artist and creator of the Indian Society of Oriental Art in 1907 and founder of the influential Bengal school of art (Wikipedia). 2) The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, the Astronomer Poet of Persia, translated by Edward FitzGerald, with coloured plates from drawings by Abanindro Nath Tagore, published by Leopold B. Overall Very Good condition, heavy toning to front and rear endpapers, but clean and unmarked, fairly bright interior throughout. Housed in a Good condition, tape-repaired slipcase, paper illustration thereover. Previous owner's bookplate inside front flap, faint shadowing of tape removal to pastedown, brilliant illustration of Quatrain I at frontis, pulling to first signature, then 15 more, plus a biographical Preface devoted to Edward FitzGerald, xxxviii [2], 42-197 pp. All in, quite a fine exemplar; 4) Ruba'iyat of Omar Khayyam: a new metrical version rendered into English from various Persian Sources, by George Roe, Chicago: A.C.
