By using sources such as Mizan ül-Hak, Düstur ül-Amel, Tarih-I Kostantiniyye ve Kayasire and Tarih-i Frengi Tercümesi, this book analyzes Kâtip Celebi, one of the most prominent intellectuals of the 17th century. Kâtip Celebi, who might be seen as a renaissance man, was an influential thinker who contributed to a variety of different fields including history, politics, naval warfare, society, philosophy, Islamic law, and many others. This book aims to explore Kâtip Celebi's thoughts on 17th century crises, including his ideas on how to reform the Ottoman state structure. It discusses his ideas on society and authority which are grounded in reason and religious law simultaneously. This work suggests Kâtip Celebi provided an authentic intellectual perspective that was critical of different sides in the above-mentioned debates and provided a moderate and balanced approach when analyzing various issues. Etat : New. This book will examine Talebe Defteri (1913-1919), one of the childrens' magazines published in the late Ottoman period. This magazine focused mainly on the formation of an ideal child based on the ideas of nationalism and modernity. Nationalism became a popular idea in Ottoman society and among Ottoman intellectuals, especially after the Balkan Wars in which the Ottoman Empire was defated by some of the Balkan states which led to loss of much of its lands in the region. Nationalism was not just a popular idea but it was also put into practice through state policies. Therefore, one of the objectives of this book will be the analysis of the magazine through the filter of nationalism. With patriotic agitation, Talebe Defteri stimulated the nationalist feelings of readers and raised national consciousness. At the same time, it promoted militarism, heroism, patriotism and revenge. Besides the idea of nationalism, Talebe Defteri presented a perspective of modernity to its readers by supporting a modern education system and its methods, equality between men and women, the improvement of women's social status, entrepreneurship, formation of a domestic bourgeoisie, development of a modern healthcare system, and promotion of modern methods in physical training. Also, it touched upon issues of morality which were based on bourgeoisie and national moral codes. Editors: Translator: 241 pages.

Etat : New. For the last two decades there have been countless books and debates on the subject of the revival of the Islamic movement in Turkey and its meaning: are we witnessing the transformation of the Atatürk's Turkish Republic, founded on staunchly secular principles, into a type of theocratic Islamic state, or was the rise of political Islam simply a return to a cultural and political 'authenticity' long denied by the Kemalist regime? The present volume shows, through the reports and observations of the American diplomats stationed in Turkey in the 1950s, that the roots of Turkey's Islamic movement lie in currents and trends already present in this period, and that much of the current discussion is not so new, but has actually been going on in western political and diplomatic circles since this time. As such, this work should prove to be an indispensable reference for the scholars working on contemporary Turkey and on the complex relations between cultural and political Islam and the secular order in Turkish society. Etat : New. Ergatis is a Greek-language newspaper published in Izmir from August 1908 until April 1909. Through the study of this newspaper, this book tries to shed light on certain aspects of the ideological developments that took place in the Ottoman Empire during the first months of the Second Constitutional Period, giving one example of one of the possible handicaps of Ottoman modernization. It would seem that at least a part of Izmir's Greek-orthodox bourgeoisie - to which the publishers of Ergatis belong - rally around goals that are not very different from the goals pursued by the Young Turks: uniting all Ottomans around a notion of Ottomanism, modernizing the Ottoman Empire and constructing an Ottoman national economy. However, their inability - or unwillingness - to sever their ties with their community's traditional leadership and ideology, places severe constraints upon their modernizing discourse. In order to avoid any social upheaval that would impair their community's standing within the Ottoman power balance, they are obliged, instead of seeking new alliances that would strengthen their modernizing outlook, to espouse an elitist discourse and to draw on traditional elements, thus invalidating their modernizing discourse. This book scrutinizes the place of surplus-receivers in the waqf institutions through their contribution to the philanthropy and the political economy of the 16th-17th century Ottoman Empire. By revealing their importance, the questions circle around surplus-receivers aim to reveal who they are, what their place and importance in the waqf, how and on which base they were assigned to these duties and how they can be interpreted in the context of the philanthropy by the examination of mainly the registers of zev?id-hor?n and waqf account books with complementary sources. The examination and analysis of the sources set forth that this group is a mean for providing social security by sustaining high-ranking officers and also a vehicle for providing social welfare, at the same time, contributed to the legitimization of the ruler. Etat : New. One of the starkest examples of the Ottoman Empire's new modernity was the fabrics and carpet model factory founded at Hereke in 1842. This study focuses on the evolving conditions and social developments that took place over seventy-two years of production at Hereke, and discuss that the factory represented a microcosm of the Empire's wider industrial labor history. Hereke was used as a lens through which to explore a range of themes that, taken together, highlight the lifestyles of the early Ottoman workforce and its industrial relations: labor management, industrial action, child labor, class, gender, housing, education, clothing fashion, the uses of industry, and multiculturalism. Special emphasis is placed on three main aspects of this campus. First, the issue of housing, as Hereke represents one of the first factory campuses in Europe to adopt a model of providing custom-built housing for its workers. Second, child labor and education, since the plant not only took in orphans and provided employment to local children and the children of factory employees, but also included a school with a training and education program. Third, the plant's architectural history, which represents a crucial indicator of the overall working conditions at the factory and the degree of structural inequality that existed between different plant employees and functionaries. Etat : New. This study analyzes the Plovdiv (Bulgaria) based Ottoman language newspaper Balkan between 1910 and 1911, when confrontations between the successor Balkan states over Ottoman Macedonia radicalized. As a propaganda organ of the Ottoman Committee of Union and Progress (CUP), this medium aimed to undermine Bulgarian state`s moral claims over Macedonia and to foster Young Turk governance's legitimization in the eyes of different Muslim communities through its coverage consumed by a vast Muslim readership both in Bulgaria, Macedonia and other provinces of the Ottoman Empire. To these ends, Balkan laid a wide surveillance mechanism over the Muslims in Bulgaria and Macedonia by employing readers` letters to report on Bulgarian infringements in their respective localities. It further sought to politically and socially educate Muslims to enable their opposition to the Bulgarian state and secure their loyalty to the Ottoman Empire and the CUP. Yet, this project did not remain uncontested as deep cleavages existed among Bulgaria`s Muslims in terms of cooperation with Bulgarian political parties, conservative religious attitudes and support to the CUP regime. Overall, this research delineates the continuation of imperial networks in sovereign nation states and their usage as ideological tools. Editors: Translator: 148 pages.

Etat : New. It all happened in 1876, during "the Year of the Three Sultans" when a Bulgarian girl named Stephana made a journey to Salonika to convert to Islam and was subsequently abducted by a group of Christians. This event stoked tensions, and stirred outrage within the Muslim community. Public protests ensued, culminating in the murder of the French and German consuls by a Muslim mob on May 6, 1876. This 'Salonika Incident' would consequently trigger a wave of hysteria throughout the West and among the Christian populations of the Ottoman Empire. There was fear of an 'impending massacre of the Christians' which would never take place. A diplomatic war of words between the Sublime Porte and the Great Powers, which held the former accountable for this double crime, directly followed the incident. Through a detailed and meticulous account of this neglected episode of Ottoman-Balkan history, this book aims to cast light on an often distorted and highly misunderstood event which is a manifestation of Western attitudes toward the Ottoman Empire during the climactic years of the Eastern Question. Etat : New. History : 48 Ebru Sönmez' study deals with two developments that were of central significance for Ottoman history in the sixteenth century and beyond. Both of them continue to be hot button issues after almost five hundred years: the incorporation of northern, southern, and western Kurdistan into the Ottoman Empire and the assumption of a staunchly Sunni identity by the Ottomans in response to the political threat posed by the Safavids who claimed a Shi'ite identity. Sönmez' book is centered on Idris Bidlisi (d. 1520), a Persianate scholar whose family originates from Bidlis, a Kurdish political center in the fifteenth century. After providing an account of Bidlisi's life, the second part of Sönmez' work focuses on Bidlisi's diplomatic role in attracting the military and political allegiances of the Kurdish lords to the Ottoman center. For anyone who is interested in the history of Kurdistan and the Ottoman approach to ethnic politics, this part is a must-read. In the third part of her book, Sönmez discusses Bidlisi's political writings, focusing on the question of the legitimacy of Ottoman rule for a Muslim audience. She demonstrates that many of the Ottoman claims to Sunni caliphal legitimacy which were put forward during the reign of Süleyman the Magnificent (1520-66) were foreshadowed in Bidlisi's writings as he theorized the rise of Selim I (1512-20) to the leadership of the Islamic world. This part of her book would be of interest both to scholars of Ottoman and Islamic political thought, and those who are interested in the historical roots of the Turkish style of secularism which, rather than separating religion and the state, prefers to bring the former under the control of the latter. Turkey is country where multiple parties, ideologies, and politicians compete for the allegiance of voters. Feminists, Turkish nationalists, religious minorities, Maoists, Kurdish nationalists, the real-estate lobby, Islamists, environmentalists, and secularists are just some of the groups that vie for influenceand even these groups are fractured. By looking closely at recent political conflicts and illustrating their connections to a longer history of social struggles, this book presents an account that remains readable without sacrificing the level of detail that is essential for fully appreciating those conflicts. Politics in Turkey looks at each of the major political parties in Turkey and tells the stories of the personalities and conflicts that shaped them. Rather than focusing solely on party leaders, the book considers the lives of supporting figures, power brokers, and politicians who bridge divides within their parties. Etat : New. In the past two decades the historiography of Turkey has broken free of the shackles imposed by nationalist ideology. Scholars are now exploring dimensions that previously had been declared either irrelevant or off-limits. Towards a Social History of Modern Turkey is the work of this new generation of scholars who are committed to exploring diverse aspects of Turkish history at a time when there is growing recognition that a socio-historical perspective has an important contribution to make to our understanding of the Turkish past. The authors are all concerned to explore the social dimension of one of the great changes that is common to all modern histories, namely the establishment of the nation-state. The essays in this volume are the result of a series of workshops in which scholars explored how to move beyond the bare skeleton of Ottoman and/or republican Turkish political history, and to add substance to a framework that is already well-known. Trained and employed in both North America and Turkey, this generation of scholars brings to the task a variety of disciplinary perspectives that includes history, anthropology, sociology and political science. In their essays the authors discuss both how they have tackled the challenge of writing the social history of Turkey and also their most important conclusions. As such they provide a variety of refreshing and promising perspectives on the history of modern Turkey. Editors: Brockett, Gavin D. Translator: 180 pages.

Etat : New. This book aims to examine the effects of the Celali Revolts -a series of rebellions in Anatolia- in the 17th century Ottoman transformation period. The transformation period refers to a period in which the empire experienced important challenges and changes in military and financial institutions due to the effects of local developments and external events during the transition from the 16th to the 17th century. In this book, the effects of Celali Revolts are examined concentrating especially on demography and economy by using the concept of "the Celali Effect". The short and long run effects of these revolts are examined by focusing on the regions Northern and Central Anatolia, which were heavily affected by these revolts. The destructive effects of the Celali Revolts are dealt with between 1576 and 1643 owing to the availability of the case studies and Ottoman archival sources namely, the mukataa defters (tax-farming registers), iltizam talepnameleri (records of demands for tax-farms), and mühimme registers (records of imperial decrees). Moreover, the reports and letters of the French Embassy are also used since they provide important information that one can use to follow the destructive effects of the Celali Revolts. Etat : New. In this book, the cultural politics of the period is tried to be investigated through the activities of the Translation Bureau between 1940 and 1946. Hasan-Âli Yücel was appointed as the Minister of Culture in the government formed just after Atatürk's passing away. This change directly pointed out a significant shift in the cultural politics of the country and the ideological framework of this politics was identified as the Turkish humanism. According to this approach, severing all ties with the authentic culture belonged to the post-Islamic era and constructing modern Turkish identity based on Western humanism consisting of Greek and Latin works was aimed. The translation movement functioned as a channel which bridged the political and literary fields in this period. A cultural transfer was expected through Western classical works translated by the Translation Bureau. Additionally, these works were put at the centre of the national literary system as canonical works. This study focused on the various writings and speeches of Yücel, who kept his position as a Minister of Culture/National Education for the longest time during the all-Republican era, and several studies regarding him. The main argument of this work is that the ideology of Turkish humanism, which framed the cultural politics implemented during Yücel's ministry, was a kind of Westernist nationalism that was future-oriented rather than being focused on the past. Etat : New. This book compares religion-state relations in Turkey and Iran by adopting a historical perspective. It explores the various historical trajectories, international developments and cultural elements that generated distinct religion-state relations in these two national contexts. It argues that the main determinants of this relation derive from the varying degrees of institutionalisation of religious establishments. Historical analysis reveals that the Turkish state inherited a type of state tradition in which religion was strongly controlled and incorporated to the state structure. Conversely, in Iran, especially after the Safavid period, state tradition was marked by the relative autonomy of religious establishments from the state. The influence of international factors on religion-state dynamics is also analyzed. Direct international factors are found to have been more influential in the Iranian case whereas in the Turkish case indirect factors played a more decisive role. This book also argues that it is misleading to point to differences between Shi'a and Sunni sects in an essentialist manner to explain the different paths that these two countries followed. Etat : New. First years of the Turkish Republic was witnessing a new nation-state building. In this period of time, nationalism and construction of a national identity among the peoples was the core problem of the ruling cadre. Hence, official history was used as one of the major devices to install Turkish identity and consciousness to the nation which was being reshaped to adopt the dominant ideology of the power. This study aims to put forth the basics of official historiography in Turkey and its reflections on educational practices during the Single Party Regime. Within this framework, this study will display the changes and continuities in the formation of the official history in Turkey and its dissemination through education as ideological tools for the building of a nation-state.
