Ajouter au panierTrade Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Rhetts, Pauline - Book Design (illustrateur). First Edition. 177 Pages Indexed. Stiff covers with flaps. There are three tiny chips on the leading edge of the front cover. Barely noticeable. No other defects noted and interior illustration and text pages flawless. What was the most challenging photographic subject of Ansel Adams career? Many would agree that it was Carlsbad Caverns, where Adams struggled to photograph in the inhospitable darkness. At one point during his work at the Caverns, Adams wrote a letter to friend and fellow photographer Alfred Stieglitz, asking him to pray for me. Did he succeed or fail? The previously unpublished Adams images in this book will allow lovers of photographic art to come to their own conclusions. This book traces the history of artists and photographers who have explored the awe-inspiring forms and colors in one of the most extensive cavern systems in the world. The book includes images from the first caver/artist to capture the cave's mysteries in oil on canvas, Will Shuster in 1924, to contemporary, surrealistic photographs of cave pearls, soda straws, and pristine pools of blue-green water. With over 140 images, most in color, this book tells the story of how Carlsbad Caverns has inspired artists since the early days of the twentieth century. It also documents the history of cave exploration at the park and the evolution of photography. Every cave enthusiast, photographer, and art lover will enjoy reading this unique book. Lois Manno has been a caver for thirty years. She is a fine artist and graphic designer who has volunteered at Carlsbad Caverns National Park for more than fifteen years. She lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Contents in Eight Chapters: The Artist-Explorers, The Intrepid Photographers, 1900-1930, The Evolving Spectacle, A Struggle in The Dark Ansel Adams, Portrait of a National Part, Finding A Place in the Mainstream, The Photographic Legacy Continues, and Today's Speleoartists.

From the back cover: The history of the church of the Holy Faith in Santa Fe is of special interest for several reasons, It is the oldest Episcopal Church, and one of the oldest of any Protestant denomination , in New Mexico. Its early leaders, men like Governor L. Bradford Prince, Senator Thomas B. Catron, and Senator Bronson M. Cutting, were prominent in government and politics; their careers linked church and state in early twentieth century Santa Fe. Some of its buildings were designed by the greatest architect of Santa Fe style, John Gaw Meem, who, together with his wife Faith, was a loyal parishioner for many decades. Art work in the church includes a reredos by well-known artist Gustav Baumann. The churches pipe organ is the largest in northern New Mexico and the music program has long - standing connections with the Santa Fe Opera. The early chapters of the Holy Faith history are thus part of the political and artistic history of Santa Fe and indeed New Mexico and the Southwest. Cloth in dust jacket. Light shelfwear. Very Good.
