Bound volume of eight uncommon pamphlets relating to the controversy initiated by Conyers Middleton's Free enquiry into the miraculous powers supposed to have subsisted in the Christian church from the earliest ages (1748). Leslie Stephen called Middleton's Free Enquiry 'incomparably the most effective [publication] of the whole deist controversy.' It was published the same year as Hume's first Enquiry which contains an essay, 'On Miracles.' Many years later, in My Own Life (London 1777), Hume confessed his chagrin: 'On my return from Italy, I had the mortification to find all England in a ferment, on account of Dr. Middleton's Free Enquiry, while my performance was entirely overlooked and neglected.' There was every reason to compare the two books, for the tendency of both was to undermine the belief in the miraculous. But whereas Hume was raising methodological difficulties about the possibility of providing adequate historical proof of such occurrences ? Middleton was concerned primarily with the [adequacy of the] historical evidence actually available." - Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Middleton was prepared to accord greater authority to the miracles recounted in the Bible than to those attested to by the later Church Fathers. This volume is in fair condition. There is significant damage to the leather covering the front board and the spine, and there is staining from what would appear to have been a now missing decoration on the front and back cover. There is also damage to the spine, and cracking to the hinges. Other than age-related staining however, the interior of the book is in excellent shape and the binding is tight.…

Including a table showing the rates of beating of tempered 5ths on the various notes of the scale calculated for a series of pitches or performance the temperaments used are mean-tone and Smith's own system of equal harmony. It is significant that his approach to the problem of tuning a keyboard instrument was through the judgment of the musician's ear: he tried out his equal harmony on the harpsichord, and the first organ of the Foundling Hospital, with its system of alternative notes actuated by selective stops, is said to have been built under his directions. Rear joint cracked alongside top three compartments, front joint somewhat rubbed and slightly snagged at top and bottom, minor marks to covers, but the binding still solid. Front flyleaf and title page with indentations from a paper clip, persistent thumbing, small smudges, and minor marginal stains, occasional corner creases; a well-loved copy, but with nothing approaching a fatal defect. This rarely seen adulatory narrative of the five voyages Columbus made to the new world was apparently geared to a youthful audience that would be excited and inspired by his adventures--and perhaps encouraged to embrace endeavors to expand the British empire. Accordingly, the text reads more like an adventure story than a scholarly account. The unattributed text notes the contributions of other explorers, including John Cabot, who sailed to Newfoundland in 1494, and Amerigo Vespucci, who did not, in the author's opinion, deserve to have continents named for him. Footnotes explain which of the islands Columbus claimed for Spain now belonged to England. The book was first printed around 1750, and ESTC records four additional issues in the 18th century. Few copies have appeared at auction, most no doubt read to death by the boys for whom they were intended.…
