Trade paperback. Etat : Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 168, [2] pages. Illustrations. Chronology of Events: 1880-1920. Bibliography. Notes. Index. Inscribed by Dennis for author on title page. This is one of the California Voices series. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Catherine Mulholland was a historian whose biography of her grandfather William Mulholland sought to correct the image of the man who was sometimes vilified for his central role in bringing water to Southern California. Mulholland was an Irish immigrant who oversaw the construction of the 230-mile aqueduct that carries water from the Owens Valley to Los Angeles. It is one of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century and a source of controversy for the water wars it provoked. A teacher suggested that Mulholland read what historian Carey McWilliams and other writers had said about her grandfather. She was "sobered and perplexed" by their accounts, which cast him as one of the "exploitative overlords" of Southern California. Probing records and family memories of a past that haunted her for years, she wrote "William Mulholland and the Rise of Los Angeles" to provide a fairer, more nuanced view of a ditch tender who rose to chief of what is now the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. A lively and human history of the western San Fernando Valley, centered on the pioneer families of 19th century Calabasas. The book reveals an important period in the history of the Southern California region. The settlers of 19th century Calabasas saw themselves as an energetic and progressive lot, up against the dust, winds, and strong temperaments of a new little town. Theirs is a story of land feuds and village lore, far out in the western San Fernando Valley. But it was a beautiful land, with abundant crops and ventures into the nearby canyons. Catherine Mulholland has captured the details and characters of a lost world, in this set of true and rousing tales. This lively work traces themes, progress, and quirky characters familiar in the history of so many Southern California towns. Hortensia Chu (cover design) (illustrateur). …
