The title page is present, dated MDCCLXIX, with the royal coat of arms. The volume concludes correctly with "The End of the Sixth Volume". Bound in full leather. The binding remains sound and intact and presents well as an 18th century volume. Internally complete, with text clear and legible throughout. There is expected age-related toning, light foxing, and general handling wear.

The third edition of this novel in a half calf binding, with a decoratively stamped spine. Ink inscription to the front free end paper, dated 1849. Lacking the listed illustrations. Henry Cockton (1807-1853) was an…English novelist, remembered primarily for The Life and Adventures of Valentine Vox, the Ventriloquist. His comic tale Sylvester Sound the Somnambulist, about a persistent sleepwalker who unknowingly performs many exploits, also enjoyed some success. It sold over 40,000 copies, and remained in print until 1921. Its preface explores sleepwalking. In a half calf binding. Externally smart, with some fading to the spine, rubbing to the extremities and bumping to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with the odd spot throughout. Boards holding but shaken front end paper not marked but loose. Rear paper missing. Title has engraving of William the 4th opposite. 948 pages with around 150 engravings. Thin paper is… toned some spotting but not foxed. Several pages towards the rear are loose and chipped up but all there. A scarce item on the order of a pulp novel.

Original blank page before the title page has handwritten inscription, dated 1774, saying received one shilling for binding this book. Previous owners signature to front pastedown. Apart from the defects noted this is a VG copy of a scarce title., 1774
