Etat : Sehr gut. 110 S.; zahlr. Abb.; kart. Ein sehr gutes Exemplar. - englisch u. chinesisch. - Ways of Seeing is the title of a book by John Berger. I became inspired by both the author and the form of the book, in which his writing begins on the cover page and ends with this phrase: 'To be continued by the reader.' Taking Joh…n Berger's invitation literally, I'm proposing here my 'way of seeing,' through a miscellany of notes and quotes I've compiled during my stay at the Gyeonggi Creation Center in South Korea-more precisely, in Daebu Island-from March to May 2011. My encounter with a Shaman during this particular period and at this specific place provoked in me the need to understand more, while I was also working on some art works that relate to this encounter. I read certain texts that are of great interest, which I consider as follow-ups in the editing process for those notes and quotes I've been collecting. My meetings with this shaman and the subsequent intimacy we developed between each other have opened an indeterminate space which I call 'space in between'; one that presents a situation of exchange. What is central here is how, considering the diversity of the contexts, worlds or languages we have found in our meetings, is the transformation into something new. Quite early on, after our first several meetings, the shaman asked me to be 'her daughter,' to transmit her knowledge. This hit me like an electric shock, as all of a sudden, I wasn't seeing shamanism as something peculiar anymore. I had to go further on, trying to clarify the context and my position, bringing to light certain questions that linked to the perspective of being a shaman and/or an artist, and see how they can relate, how they act and position themselves in our contemporary society. First Edition. 22.5 x 15cm. Paperback, 373pp. Publication for Hyun A Cho's solo exhibition 'I would like to hear someone's voice' at Cake Gallery, Seoul, South Korea, 6th October - 30th October. 2016. A striking example of the use of die-cutting, with five holes artistically penetrating the book. Contains various materials in Ko…rean and English. Hyun A Cho collected fragments of the life stories of those who have faced "a lonely death" living in social seclusion in Korea and Japan, and this solo exhibition was the first presentation of her research into this phenomenon of alienation increasingly seen in modern society. The title of the project derived from an utterance of a homeless person in Tokyo who told an investigatory social team "I would like to hear someone's voice," and referring to their radio, "this radio is the only friend of mine". Likewise, Cho's sound art orientated installation featured a number of voices diffused through radios; emphasis is placed on the voice and its dislocation. The book is an interesting production comprising distressed texts, some relating to the exhibition, and some repurposed found material, digitally 'deep fried', and photographic black and white images. Rare.
