The authors detail the exploits of an unforgettable cast of villains, crooks and mobsters who have made up the criminal and gangland scene in Australia. They trace the developments in, and the shifting dynamics of Australia's criminal underworld from the early 1800s until the Melbourne gangland killings of recent years. The book follows the rise and fall of Australia's talented conmen, standover men, brothel keepers, club owners, robbers, ethnic minority crime figures, bikers, drug dealers and contract killers to illustrate how small time operations have become financially solvent criminal corporations with international links. It also examines the role of police, politicians and lawyers who have helped and hindered the growth of criminal empires. A fascinating survey of Australian criminal activity over nearly two centuries. Illus., Notes, Bibliog. and Index. 388pp. trade size softcover. With tipped-in label SIGNED BY JAMES MORTON. F. with no creasing to covers. signed by author.

Moving panorama and diorama pictures came to Australia and New Zealand during the gold rushes of the 1850s and 1860s. Entrepreneurs brought great lengths of canvas from Britain and America depicting nineteenth-century battles and sea and land journeys from England to India and Australia. Others showed nostalgic scenes of 'home', such as trips down the River Thames. Local artists, often working as theatrical scenic painters, showed pictures of the gold fields, the Burke and Wills expedition and the Murray River. Canvas Documentaries is the first detailed documentation of the Australian panorama industry. Mimi Colligan gives new insight into largely ignored visual and cultural influences that helped form the colonial experience.

This moment was not his alone, nor could it ever have come about without him - Gough Whitlam turned to Graham Freudenberg, touched him lightly on the shoulder, saying, 'It's been a long road, Comrade, but we're there', and walked out to meet the spotlight. Acclaimed biographer Jenny Hocking's Gough Whitlam: A Moment In History is the first contemporary and definitive biographical study of the former Labor Prime Minister. From his childhood in the fledgling city of Canberra to his first appearance as Prime Minister (playing Neville Chamberlain), to his extensive war service in the Pacific and marriage to Margaret, the champion swimmer and daughter of Justice Wilfred Dovey, the biography draws on previously unseen archival material, extensive interviews with family and colleagues, and exclusive interviews with Gough Whitlam himself. Hocking's narrative skill and scrupulous research reveals an extraordinary and complex man whose life is, in every way, formed by the remarkable events of previous generations of his family, and who would, in turn, change Australian political and cultural developments in the twentieth century.

They loved structure, the veins of the leaf, the relation of the leaf to the stem, the arrangement of the seed in the pod, and everything to do with the composition of the flower. They loved the surfaces of fruit, with their characteristic blemishes. They loved laying out their information on the page, in a standard scientific manner but with great energy of composition. (That is why their books have so often been disbound and the illustrations framed.) And some of them liked devising sublime landscapes for a background, to give some sense of native habitat, while Johann Volckhammer, in a great book on fruit produced in Nuremberg in the early 18th century, had the idea of placing the fruit in the sky above aerial views of the great houses in Europe where they were being cultivated. So it is that we find a grapefruit (or grapefruit-ancestor), labelled Pompelmus, hovering over a baroque moated Schloss, looking like something devised by Magritte. Elsewhere, an airborne aubergine. The idiom of these illustrations changes as the techniques for reproduction change. Woodcuts come first, followed by steel engravings, both of them coloured by hand, so that what you are looking at is the work not just of artist and engraver but also of countless, nameless, highly skilled drudges, who brought the work to its exquisite finish. .Precise technical description of a plant, coupled with a drawing, takes us a long way towards identification. The early botanical artists' work is by no means useless to us today. Often the scientific names have changed, but the flower itself jumps out at us from the page. We say: I've seen that, or I grow that. Perhaps it is familiar. But to many of these artists it was not familiar at all. It spoke of the great unknown, of uncharted creation. It seemed the latest word in the bizarre." - James Fenton.
