What could be more representative of Victorian ingenuity than a seaside cliff lift driven solely by the action of water and gravity? Most of the lifts at the English resorts were constructed when the industrial revolution was at its height and Queen Victoria ruled an Empire that encircled the globe. Some were successful, some were not, and nowhere in the country was this more exemplified than at Folkestone which once boasted four such lifts. This hitherto untold story is now revealed within these pages and details their construction by intrepid engineers during an age of unfettered optimism which led into their golden age of prosperity in the years before the Great War. Their subsequent demise began with the closure of the Sandgate Hill lift, followed by the Metropole lift and finally the 1890 Leas lift. Only one installation managed to survive against all odds and this, the oldest and most famous, celebrates its Centenary on the 21st September 1985. While primarily intended to commemorate this event, the book also aims to serve as a tribute to all four lifts whose colourful careers formed an important part of the character of this favoured south coast resort. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book.

Understanding Children's Ideas in Science: 40 probes for raising misconceptions and developing understanding in primary science. When teachers are starting on a new topic in science it's important to see what ideas the children already have. If we can get children thinking, talking and sharing their ideas we can learn a lot about how to pitch the following lessons. This book contains 40 'probes' which are classroom ready activities across a wide range of science topics. Aimed at teachers of children aged from 7 to 11, the materials also include guidance on how to interpret responses, reference to research on misconceptions and suggestions as to how the insights gained can be used to plan follow up lessons.Drawing on the hugely successful American series 'Uncovering Students' Ideas', these probes have been adapted for use in a wide range of settings.Understanding Children's Ideas in Science is accompanied by a downloadable resource pack.
