Ajouter au panierTrade Paperback. Etat : Used - Very Good. Architecture exists in the public sphere and is the product of collective work and knowledge. Yet the defining boundaries of the discipline are often contested. Architects can and often must embody a spectrum of characters in their practice: politician, artist, physicist, entrepreneur. Likewise, a building is the nexus of multifaceted economies, legislations, and information systems. Since 'architecture' has become a metonym for increasingly distributed persons and practices, how--and for whom--do we establish its domain? To trace the evolving meanings of the term 'domain' is to trace the changing ways that space has been defined, accessed, and constructed: from domain as a territory of private ownership or legal control; to the egalitarian promise of public domain; to an Internet site situated within an infinitely dispersed global network. Each of these shifts poses dramatic changes to how we conceive of boundaries, physically and conceptually. But as we insist on staking boundaries, we are impelled to search for their limits--however remote or nebulous. This issue of Perspecta--the oldest and most distinguished student-edited architectural journal in America--offers an initial expedition into the contested spaces of architecture's domains. Perspecta 44's multidisciplinary scope, with contributors ranging from legal scholars to software engineers, asserts a new set of coordinates for mapping the terms of architectural production. By embracing the inherent complexities of Domain, Perspecta 44 seeks to overcome the architect's conventional repertoire--Site, Program, and Client--and propose instead Field, Protocol, and User as an expanded vocabulary for spatial practice, not without boundaries but rather abiding by the shifting logics and contours of public space. contributors: B kaFilms, R. Howard Bloch, Craig Buckley, Mario Carpo, common room, Peggy Deamer, Neil Denari, Forum for Urban Design, Sophie Houdart, Sam Jacob, Office Kersten Geers David Van Severen, Bruno Latour, Lawrence Lessig, Richard Meier, Ralitza Petit, Nasser Rabbat, Casey Reas and Ben Fry et al. Ajouter au panierTrade Paperback. Etat : New. In 2006, even though he could barely type, China's most famous artist started blogging. For more than three years, Ai Weiwei turned out a steady stream of scathing social commentary, criticism of government policy, thoughts on art and architecture, and autobiographical writings. He wrote about the Sichuan earthquake (and posted a list of the schoolchildren who died because of the government's 'tofu-dregs engineering'), reminisced about Andy Warhol and the East Village art scene, described the irony of being investigated for 'fraud' by the Ministry of Public Security, made a modest proposal for tax collection. Then, on June 1, 2009, Chinese authorities shut down the blog. This book offers a collection of Ai's notorious online writings translated into English--the most complete, public documentation of the original Chinese blog available in any language. The New York Times called Ai 'a figure of Warholian celebrity.' He is a leading figure on the international art scene, a regular in museums and biennials, but in China he is a manifold and controversial presence: artist, architect, curator, social critic, justice-seeker. He was a consultant on the design of the famous 'Bird's Nest' stadium but called for an Olympic boycott; he received a Chinese Contemporary Art 'lifetime achievement award' in 2008 but was beaten by the police in connection with his 'citizen investigation' of earthquake casualties in 2009. Ai Weiwei's Blog documents Ai's passion, his genius, his hubris, his righteous anger, and his vision for China. Manifestos and immodest proposals from China's most famous artist and activist, culled from his popular blog, shut down by Chinese authorities in 2009.

Since the 1960s, Dan Graham's heterogeneous practice has touched on suchdisparate subjects as tract housing, the Shakers, punk music, and architecturaltheory; he has made videos, architectural models, closed-circuit installations, andglass pavilions. Graham, who came of age during the emergence of earth art, minimalism, and conceptualism, has situated his work on the borders between thesedifferent strains of contemporary practice. Although varying widely in subject andmedium, Graham's artwork and writings display a consistent interest inspectatorship, public-private relationships, and the constructed environment.Graham's extensive writings on his own work (collected in Rock My Religion andTwo-Way Mirror Power, both published by the MIT Press) have made him, by default, the primary interpreter of his own art. This October Files volume provides acounterweight, gathering key texts by critics and theorists that offer alternativeaccounts of Graham's art. The essays span thirty years and include hard-to-findtexts from exhibition catalogs and journals. The authors include such distinguishedtheorists, critics, and artists as Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Beatriz Colomina, Thierryde Duve, and Jeff Wall. A collection of essayson a key figure in postminimalist art, with texts spanning thirty years.
