White paper covers; some soiling to rear cover. Past bookseller's price in pencil at front free endpaper's top right corner; interior pages are otherwise bright and clean. Binding remains crisp. A very good+ copy which would grade higher if not for the aforementioned soiling. With Foreword, two color plates, and numerous b/w illustrations. This is the best of several books that review the landmark Natchez, Mississippi octagonal and byzantine-domed mansion designed by Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan and commissioned by Dr. Haller Nutt. Only the exterior shell and nine of the house's thirty-two rooms were completed before construction halted in 1861. The Civil War withered the family fortune and Dr. Nutt's passing from pneumonia in 1864 all but assured that the grandiose albeit unfinished home (soon earning the appellation "Nutt's Folly") would never achieve its intended antebellum opulence and be a symbol of both lost dreams and the lost cause.
