Betwen 1892 and 1930 a great number of specimens of rare birds… were recorded in the Hastings area, many of which came through the hands of local taxidermist, George Bristow. In 1962, the authenticity of these records was challenged through the journal, British Birds. Subsequently 595 of these records were "struck off" by the Official List of British Birds. The resulting scandal became known as the Hastings Rarities Affair, and many people believed that the records were fraudulent. Dr Pat Morris examines the evidence and comes to the conclusion that the records were most likely valid, and explains the improbability of anyone being able to produce so many fresh dead specimens from all around the world. It is known that only 100 copies have been printed. .

Colonel Charles Theodore Echalaz a…t the turn of the twentieth century. The collection was donated to the local council at Waterloo, Liverpool, to be displayed in the Waterloo Museum, attached to the, then, new Carnegie Library. The collection sustained a direct hit during a bombing raid in 1941, and was further damaged in a burglary in the 1980's. The collection remains in storage at the library today. A description of each surviving case is accompanied by a colour photograph taken especially for this book. Echalaz printed his own catalogue of the collection (1907) with black and white plates of each case. Where appropriate, this book reproduces Echalaz's own photographs for comparison. .

The development, over 300 years, of mammal and bird taxidermy, including elephants and even humans, are reviewed, along with attempts to locate the oldest existing stuffed animals. The controversy regarding the use of arsenic as a preservative is assessed, with some surprises. Several chapters describe in detail how taxidermy businesses operated in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Their different styles of products, trade labels (including some poems from them!) and their major groups of customers, ranging from huntsmen to bird collectors, are described, with many quirky stories, historical snippets and wry comment. Although the main focus is principally on British taxidermists, the general picture also applies to contemporary taxidermists in Europe and the USA. A whole chapter is devoted to the special features of American taxidermy and how different it is from that of Europe. Frequent reference is also made to American taxidermists in other chapters and the Foreword is by Larry Blomquist, publisher of a major American taxidermy magazine. A review of taxidermy books published in Europe and the USA makes some revelations about who thought of what first. A final chapter on taxidermy today discusses and dissects the unsubstantiated complaints and ignorant criticisms made of this subject." .
