Undated Cairo edition of Ibn Khaldun's famous Muqaddimah or 'Introduction,' to a comprehensive history of the world written in 1377 by the Arab scholar Ibn Khaldûn. Though it is the preliminary section of the history, the Muqaddimah treats in almost encyclopaedic detail the general problems of the philosophy of history and sociology, and it has become known as a self-contained work. Among writings of the manuscript age the Muqaddimah is unique for the breadth and freshness of its analytic insights. It attempts a total view of mankind and of the forms of social organisation, their driving forces and motivations, the purpose and functions of government, the roles of labour and money and of the arts, crafts, sciences, and religions. It is a summing up of the achievements of historical Islam a work considered to be far in advance of similar studies eventually undertaken by Europeans. A. J. Toynbee has called the Muqaddimah "undoubtedly the greatest work of its kind that has ever yet been created by any mind in any time or place." Al-Zamakhshari, also called Jar Allah, (1075-1144), was a medieval Muslim scholar of Persian origin, who subscribed to the Mu'tazilite theological doctrine but later repented and converted to Sunni Islam. He was born in Khwarezmia, but lived most of his life in Bukhara, Samarkand, and Baghdad. He was a great authority on the Arabic language as well as a rationalist theologian. Asas al-Balagha (The Foundation of Eloquence), considered one of his major works, is a thesaurus and dictionary of figurative speech, in part to reconcile what he viewed as the miraculous nature of the Qur'an with his theological views. It was the earliest Arabic lexicography to be organised in a completely alphabetical form, and was noteworthy for its attention to metaphorical meanings. Words therein are listed in order from the first of their three component letters to the last, excluding complicated forms derived from roots as well as rare roots such as quadrilaterals and quint-laterals. Zamakhshari's goal was to catalogue both the literal and figurative meanings of Arabic words, and he used examples from the Qur'an and Hadith for both.
