The snake head of murrels are a group of air breathing fishes which by virtue of the presence of accessory respiratory org…an can thrive well in fallow derelict swampy waters normally considered as adverse low oxygen environments condition. Among the different air breathing fishes Channa sp. (murrels) constitute the most common and dominent group. Murrels are highly priced fishes all over the India for their good keeping quality unique flavour nutritive recuperative and medicinal properties especially in Punjab West Bengal M.P. and Peninsular India. This group of fishes constitute the mainstay of natural freshwater fisheries in Peninsular India where they are reared in village ponds irrigation wells and shallow water. Among different murrels which are available in India the giant murrel (Channa marulius) the stripped murrel (C.straitus) and the spotted murrel (C.Punctatus) are important and commonly available species of which the former two attain a large size and are of economic importance. Because of their hardy nature and capacity to thrive in swamp and derelict waters where Indian major carps can not survive murrels have attracted the attention of pisciculturists scientists and planners as a candidate species for culture with minimal investment. The major constraint in their culture is the lack of knowledge about their biology and absence of culture methods is available at present. A sincere attempt has been made in this book to gather information on the bionomics seed resources of three important species of murrels and their culture viability this will be definitely an asset to the farmers scientists and planners alike. 112 pp.

From the Preface Induced breeding and polyculture of carps are well known technologies being extensively adopted on a large scale in almost all parts of the country. The thrust in aquaculture has led to more demand for quality stocking material. Ever increasing demand of quality seed cannot be met by collection of seed from natural resources i.e. rivers canals etc. Many aquaculturists and agencies those were earlier dependant on natural fish seed collection have switched over to artificial fish seed production in recent years. Since the establishment of Pond Culture Division of Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute at Cuttack in 1949 and presently the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture Bhubaneswar it has made epoch making contributions to R and D in aquaculture in the country. Two major technologies such as induced breeding and composite culture of carps laid the foundations of Indian Aquaculture. CIFA has developed technologies to produce seed for a prolonged duration covering pre and post monsoon months by multiple spawning of carps. The invention of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique by Kary. B. Mullis has revolutionized the field of diagnostic molecular biotechnology. Its ability to detect pathogens at the molecular level has given it an unparalleled stature. Initially restricted to the laboratories now it has found wide application at the field level. This is evident from the present surge in references to the technique. With the plenitude of viral and bacterial epizootics plaguing shrimp aquaculture and remedies for the same being a distant possibility the aquaculture sector as such is opting for newer strategies to keep itself sustainable. One such approach which is gaining momentum is to screen shrimp seeds prior to stocking and broodstocks prior to seed production. How far this approach will contribute in striking a balance between loss and production has been successfully established in recent years in India. The scenario in the aquaculture sector has changed with the popularization of the PCR technique whereby farmers are insisting on PCR tested seeds and hatcheries are not taking risk by using untested broodstocks. PCR the repetitive bi directional DNA synthesis via primer extension of a specific nucleic acid sequence is simple in design and can be applied in seemingly endless ways.
