Dek. förlagsband. Fint skick. Stockholm, P. A. Norstedt & Söners förlag, 1970. 4:o. 192 sid. - - - 'Jacob A. Riis (1849-1914) was born in Ribe in Denmark, learned to be a carpenter and emigrated to USA in 1870, where after several years as a homeless, itinerant miscellaneous worker, he became a journalist, photographer and social worker. Among all the forgotten and rediscovered documentary photographers in photo history, Jacob Rus is one of the most remarkable. He began his career as a journalist and social critic as a police reporter for the New York Tribune. His reports on crime became studies in the environments that created criminals and the misery that caused law violations, his area of work was the immigrant slums on Manhattan's gloomy lower east side, where more criminals were produced than in the rest of New York and where mass graves were the last rest for many. In the camera, Riis found a powerful ally. He immortalized life in the darkest corners with the help of magnesium flash and used his images as a complement to words, as evidence and documents. Through his objective attitude to photography as an ally in the fight against the slums of the great city, he became the first to effectively combine image and words in critical social reporting that led to legislation and reforms. Rune Hassner's biography of this colorful, energetic and eventually very influential social reformer and journalist - a close friend of President Theodore Roosevelt - is based on in-depth source studies of materials that have only recently become available in American archives and libraries. The book not only paints a full-length portrait of a remarkable personality but also depicts the background to Riis' work, the New York slum that many hopeful immigrants got stuck in during the decades around the turn of the century. 72 picture pages presents Jacob Riis as a photographer, pictures that for more than half a century have been forgotten but which today have given him a rightful place in the history of photography as a pioneer, the first to realize that a camera could be used as a battering ram.'.
