From the artists' website: No Reply Press is excited to announce Per Se Phone, an illustrated collection of poems by Ruta Kuzmickas. This first edition features eleven poems and five pen-and-ink illustrations which lend themselves beautifully to letterpress. Rutas poetry is electric. It eschews clunky and clichéd phrasing for a lyrical sensibility, without ever resting into simple or tired rhyme structures. While thoroughly original, there are flashes (and collectors of No Reply will recognize this to be a supreme compliment) of T. S. Eliot. One such moment: this is a place where I cannot be reached. this is a place where evening descends like sheets of tracing paper, details buried underneath, blurred by frosted sleep. The poetry is intricately woven, and without fat. Language reduced to its core elements. They are the literary analogue to the pen-and-ink illustrations which accompany them. These are explained by Kuzmickas: "As a self-taught visual artist, the simmering point in terms of developing a visual language came when I first gave up on the idea of drawing something accurately, allowing my hand to flow in a more natural, unpredictable rhythm. I had fallen in love with the topography of Rodin sculpture, and so I made ink recreations as a challenge to myself: can I make a topographical map of a sculpture with black ink? A photograph? I then took to drawing as though I were sculpting wire or thread, tangling everything together but seeking clarity amid the knots. This led me to making faces out of single pieces of wire in order to feel what the pen was feeling, as many of my drawings tend to be layered masses of bent, unbroken lines. I obsessively draw faces and figures, and have only recently begun to incorporate watercolor, and bright red circular hearts." Artist's Notes: Ruta Kuzmickas is a visual artist, pianist, poet, photographer, and interdisciplinary collaborator. Although she has played the piano since age six and has earned two degrees in piano performance from Rice University, her heart lies in crossovers of images, words, movement, and music. She frequently collaborates with composers, musicians, and artists. Her first book of poetry, Flash Flood Fiction, was published in 2020. Ruta lives in Portland, Oregon. Delivered originally as a commencement address at Harvard University, her words are here rendered into an essay and published in print for the first time. An elegy for what we have lost, and a philippic for what must be preserved, Adichies address is both soaring and specific. Her counsel is poignant and memorable. As Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "In every work of genius we recognize majesty. Great works of art have no more affecting lesson for us than this. In these disorienting times, where the difference between up and down is blurred, let alone between right and wrong, she offers an inspired remedy. Which is to say, read widely. Read fiction, and poetry, and narrative nonfiction. Make the human story the center of your understanding of the world. Literature is my religion. I have learned from literature that we humans are flawed - all of us are flawed. But even while flawed we are capable of enduring goodness. We are inspired by Adichies faith in the power of literature to play a leading role in our perennial rediscovery of human goodness. For years Diadchenko has been among the foremost Ukrainian writers and an advocate for the Ukrainian language on the world stage. While her manuscript was dazzling, with No Reply Press' publishing agenda already full, we did not plan to publish Magnetic Storms in 2023. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has changed that. Like many watching events unfold, we are left wondering, "What can we do?" Any individual action can feel vanishingly insignificant, like tossing a pebble into a river to stop its flow. Eventually, however, the pebbles can pile up. So, we must do something, however small. The role of a publisher in the internet age is not to circulate information, but to help curate what circulates and shape "the canon." While Russian literature is widely celebrated in the West, and deservingly so, Ukrainian literature has often been overlooked, or worse, subsumed as Russian literature. For those who have never experienced the power of the Ukrainian language, watch this performance from when the great Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha visited us in the Pacific Northwest several years ago. The vitality that DakhaBrakha brings to music, Lyudmyla Diadchenko brings to written poetry. The title, Magnetic Storms, captures the energy of these poems. They are riveting, vivid, electric even in translation. They have been masterfully translated by American poet Padma Thornlyre, with the assistance of Ukrainian writers Viacheslav Stelmakh and Dmitrou Teplouhov. The translation has been handled delicately, for those unable to read the original. We are sure that all readers will appreciate the power of Diadchenko's poetry. This collection transports us to the hermitage, Chads home, in a time of flux and timelessness, a time of new ambitions and aging, with chores to do and great art to make. The Press got its start with an edition of Poe's The Masque of the Red Death, funded only a month before the Coronavirus pandemic began in earnest. Eerie timing. Two years later, the Press announced an edition of The Cask of Amontillado. Now, to complete a trilogy of sorts, we are happy to share with you our edition of The Tell-Tale Heart! Poe is the quintessential American author. As one scholar put it, "Whether or not America has produced a greater genius than Poe, it would be hard to prove that it has produced one more original." In The Tell-Tale Heart, he presents once again a story of captivating simplicity of a man driven mad by an obsession, of guiltless admission. It is perhaps Poe's most famous story because it is so disorienting. The No Reply edition has been designed as a reaction to the story. We have employed colors, tones, textures, and an artistic vision to make Poe's writing visceral for the reader.
