One partial sheet, 12 x12 inches, the lower left quadrant cut away â" the complete poem, written on both sides, signed: âMr. Compositor:-- Please follow copy, precisely. B.T.â Inspired by Shakespeareâs "The Tempest". Taylorâs take on freedom vs. confinement (quiet desperation?). The first appearance of the poem may have been in Grahamâs Magazine, May, 1849. It appeared frequently thereafter, two examples - Taylorâs "A Book of Romances", Ticknor, Reed and Fields, 1852 (BAL 1964); his "The Poems", Ticknor and Fields, 1866. The editors of "The Poems of Robert Browning, 1862-1871" (published in 2014 by Routledge), pages 6 and 7, speculate that Browningâs poem, âCaliban Upon Setebosâ, (from "Dramatis Personae", 1864) was probably partially suggested by Taylorâs poem. Along with "The Tempest", Browning was influenced by his friend Richard Henry Stoddardâs âThe Witches Whelpâ, 1851, and that poem was inspired by Stoddardâs best friend, Bayard Taylor â" all three men âshared the same American publisher.â The paper a little toned, some folds, evidently for mailing as there is a partial red wax seal on one corner.
