A very nice full set of this series of mysteries set in Tudor England, each having the same basic subtitle: "Being the __th journal of Sir Roger Shallot concerning certain wicked conspiracies and horrible murders perpetrated in the reign of King Henry VIII." This is one of a number of mystery series by this prolific author (many written under various pseudonyms ("Paul Harding," "C.L. Grace" and others)) set in specific historical periods -- usually in England, although with occasional forays into Egypt, Ancient Rome, and other settings. Sir Roger Shallot, the protagonist of this series, is described as a "self-proclaimed doctor and physician, rogue, charlatan and secret emissary of King Henry VIII and his Satanic Eminence Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Chancellor of England." Edition notes: "White Rose" (1993), "Brood" (1996) and "Gallows" (1996) are all First U.S. Editions, published by St. Martin's Press, with dust jacket illustrations by Lars Hokenson ("White Rose" only) and Richard Jones; "Chalice" (1994) and "Grail" (1994; a 2nd printing) were published by Otto Penzler Books, with jacket design/illustration by William Sloan/Three; and "Relic" (1996) is the true first (U.K.) edition, published by Headline Book Publishing, jacket illustration by Richard Jones. Marcellin Berthelot (sometimes spelled Marcelin), born on October 25, 1827 in Paris where he died on March 18, 1907, is a French chemist, physical chemist, biologist, epistemologist and po…litician. The fundamental conception that underlay all Berthelot's chemical work was that all chemical phenomena depend on the action of physical forces which can be determined and measured. When he began his active career it was generally believed that, although some instances of the synthetic production of organic substances had been observed, on the whole organic chemistry remained an analytical science and could not become a constructive one, because the formation of the substances with which it deals required the intervention of vital activity in some shape. He made significant contributions to the field through his translations and analyses of Greek, Syriac, and Arabic treatises on chemistry and alchemy. His research into these historical Arabic texts allowed him to distinguish between different traditions of practical and theoretical alchemy and provided deeper insights into the origins and development of chemistry. Umgangssprachlich wird der Begriff oft für die Rigvedasamhita, den Kern des Rigveda, verwendet, wenngleich dieser eigentlich eine größere Textsammlung umfasst. Bei der Rigvedasamhita handelt es sich um eine Sammlung von 1028 (nach anderen Zählungen 1017) Hymnen, eingeteilt in 10 Bücher, Mandalas (Liederkreise) genannt. Für die Bücher I - IX geht der Indologe Axel Michaels von einer Entstehungszeit zwischen 1750 und 1200 v.Chr. aus, das X. Buch dürfte demnach ab 1200 v. Chr. entstanden sein. Der gesamte Rigveda besteht wie alle Veden aus mehreren Textschichten, von denen die Samhitas mit den Hymnen die älteste bilden. Die Brahmanas, die folgende Textschicht, bestehen vor allem aus Ritualtexten. Dann kommen die Aranyakas, genannt Waldtexte, und schließlich die Upanishaden, welche größtenteils philosophische Abhandlungen enthalten. Während die Sprache der Hymnen vedisch ist, sind die letzten Schichten in Sanskrit geschrieben. Zu den vier Veden gehören neben dem Rigveda noch Samaveda, Yajurveda sowie Atharvaveda. Alle hinduistischen Religionen akzeptieren die Unantastbarkeit dieser vier Veden, jedoch rechnen einzelne Glaubensrichtungen individuell oft noch weiter Schriften hinzu. Rigveda auf Papier, frühes 19. Jh., mit vedischen AkzentenDer Rigveda enthält jene Texte, die für den Hotri ("Rufer"), einen der Priester im vedischen Opferkult, von Bedeutung sind. Es handelt sich um Loblieder an Götter wie Agni, Indra oder Varuna. Diese gab es, unter ähnlichen oder ganz unterschiedlichen Namen, auch bei anderen Völkern der indoeuropäischen bzw. indogermanischen Sprachgruppe. Im Rigveda finden sich die ersten nachweisbaren Hinweise zum Kastensystem: Im 10. Mandala wird im Purushasukta beschrieben, wie im Rahmen eines Opfers aus dem Purusha (Urriesen) neben der gesamten Schöpfung die vier Kasten (Varnas) entstehen. Aus dem Mund entstehen die Brahmanen, aus den Armen die Kshatriya, aus den Schenkeln die Vaishya und aus den Füßen die Shudra. Obwohl es sich um ein spätes Buch des Rigveda handelt, kann man davon ausgehen, dass zu dieser Zeit das Kastensystem im sozialen Leben noch nicht voll entwickelt war. Bemerkenswert ist hier die mythologische Legitimation von sozialen Schichtungen. Nach dem Shatapatha Brahmana besteht der Rigveda aus 432.000 Silben, was der Anzahl der muhurtas (1 Tag hat 30 muhurtas) in 40 Jahren entspricht. Diese Aussage betont die den Veden zugrundeliegende Philosophie einer Verbindung zwischen Astronomie und Religion. Im 14. Jahrhundert schrieb Yaska als einer der ersten einen ausführlichen Kommentar zum Rigveda. Die erste vollständige Übersetzung des Rigveda in eine neuzeitliche europäische Sprache wurde in den 1920er Jahren von dem Sanskritisten Karl Friedrich Geldner geleistet, der das Werk ins Deutsche übertrug. Inzwischen liegt eine Gesamtübersetzung ins Russische von Tatjana Elizarenkova (Moskau 1989-1999) vor, in der die neuere Forschungsliteratur bis ca. 1990 berücksichtigt ist. . . .
