Pages 55-58 and 68/69 with pieces missing from their fore edges, perhaps burned off. Moderate dampstaining throughout.

The interior is remarkably bright, with some scuffing along edges, tips, joints, else quite nice.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. On the front pastedown (under a bookseller's price "Vol III only 3/6") the pencilled ownership signature of Michael Davie (future Editor of the Melbourne Age), "Sydney, April 26 1946"; and on the half-title the earlier inscription "The Gift of Thomas Woore to Mrs Woore - May 22nd 1813". Thomas Woore, of Londonderry, married in 1798 Catherine Darcus, who gave birth on 29 January 1804 to a son, also Thomas, who first visited Sydney in 1829 and settled in New South Wales in 1839, buying a station, Pomeroy, near Goulburn; a naval hydrographer and pioneer pastoralist, Woore fils is now highly regarded for his watercolour sketches.

Vols. 3 and 4 (of originally a 4 vol. set), these two volumes in ONE book, printed in Ireland in 1793, is in Poor condition, being in appalling shape: cover leather is practically all-eaten away by ancient silverfish, and those hellish creatures have long ago bored into the spine leaving a deep depression; portion of the top spine is gone (see our photo); front cover literally hangs by a thread; former bookplate of one of the famous O'Grady's of Kilballyowen, pasted to front fixed endpaper (now beginning to pull away slightly); former O'Grady owner has signed their name in fountain-ink on the title page; interior pages all present, although the bound-side does show the effects of ancient silverfish in places. A glorious ruin of a book, demonstrating what time and unfortunate circumstance can bring. This appears to be the famous Tobias Smollett English translation, and the publisher has mis-identified T. Smollett as Thomas Smollett. Again this is only the last two volumes (bound as one) of the set. Only one illustration: the frontispiece. Fiction. French. Novel. Classics. DB.
