Iacomo de Rossi alla Pace, with privilege from the Supreme Pontiff.] Folio/2o. Measures around 17 1/4" x 12 1/2" x 5/8" (480mm x 318mm x 19mm). Undated but circa 1624 and believed to be a first edition. Engraved throughout by Hieronimus (Jérôme) David, whose name appears below the portrait of Soria. Contains architectural frontispiece with dedication to Cardinal Borghese, portrait of Soria, 48 numbered plates, all present, though plate 5 misprinted as 2. No portrait of Montano, which is known to be present in some works under this title, though that may only be present in the first volume. Contemporary limp parchment binding Limp cream-beige contemporary parchment binding. Many signs of wear, with marking, scuffing and edge-wear, but looks reasonably good for age. A little tattering to edges and some tearing to spine, which has some loss at the head and tail. Some strain to inner hinges but holding. A little pencil writing to front free endpaper, some marking to title page. Elsewhere, a little marking to page surfaces and toning at edges but mostly very clean, with illustrations vivid. Some tattering and tearing to page edges and some chipping to a few edges. A little worming throughout but restricted to fore-edge margins, except at pastedowns and rear endpaper. See pictures for further information. An exquisitely illustrated and scarce volume, especially so in contemporary binding. About the artist: Giovanni Battista Montano (1534-1621), Italian architect, of primary importance as a recorder of Antique Roman architectural remains. Engravings were made of his drawings by his pupil G. B. Soria, the first volume published as Scielta di varii tempietti antichi (Selection of Various Antique Temples—1624). Montano recorded grottoes, caverns, and much else, but augmenting what he had surveyed with elevations and sections evolved from his imaginings, with reality 'corrected' for subjective aesthetic reasons. He seems to have understood Roman concrete structures, and recorded vaults and complicated stairs. His other works include Diversi ornamenti capricciosi per depositi o altari (Different Capricious Ornaments for Reliquaries or Altars—1625), Tabernacoli diversi (Various Shrines—1628), and Architettura con diversi ornamenti cavati dall' antico (Architecture with Various Ornaments taken from the Antique—1636). His work informed Cortona's Santi Lucae Martina (1634-69) and the design of the façade of Bernini's Sant'Andrea al Quirinale (1658-70).
