Hard Back. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First Edition First Printing Stated. 338 Pages Indexed. Dust jacket price $25 is unclipped. Most Americans eat genetically modified food on a daily basis. Yet many of us are barely aware that we're eating something that has been altered. Food labels do not inlude information on ingredients that have been genetically modified, and the subject has received surprisingly little media coverage. Even as genetically engineered foods spread throughout America, most consumers abroad have refused to eat them. Opposition to genetically engineered food is now beginning to surface in the United States, where biotechnology is becoming a major issue for the new century. Here is the story of how these new foods, most of which are engineered either to produce or to withstand heavy doses of pesticides, quietly entered America's food supply. The author explores the potential of this new technology to enhance nutrition and cut farmers' expenses. She also reveals the porcess by which regulatory agencies decided to allow the biotechnology industry to sell its products without first submitting them to thorough testing for possible long-term threats to consumer health and the environment. Hart has talked to scientists, farmers, industry memebers, and activists, and she has gained unprecedented access to the inner chambers of the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Food and Drug Administration, where the crucial decisions have been made to allow these foods into our stores. Combining a balanced perspective with a sense of urgency, this is a revelatory guide to a subject of paramount importance.…

"Surveillance" is a deftly and humanely worked out story of post-millenial Seattle. I found particular pleasure in the fact that it flouts a rule strictly enforced in writing workshops and book groups across the county (not to mention in the minds of people who think that Hollywood actually produces art): "Surveillance" fails to conclusively conclude. I could make an argument that the conclusion is rather too conclusive, but let me simply say that the events of the ending are rather too possible for those of us on the West Coast. They are also are in key with some of the atmospherics along the way, and so document to a degree the worries of the liberal imagination in these times. Until the ending, Surveillance quite skillfully inhabits the world of the "well-made novel", weaving four (and more) stories together gracefully, each of which changes perspective on the topic as whole. Particularly impressive is the portrait of Alida, Lucy Bengstrom's eleven-year old daughter, who is individual enough to stay in the mind, but with nary a speck of preciousness. But it is in the portrait of Lucy that "Surveillance" succeeds the most. "Waxwings" was mostly the story of a professor with an age and opinions close to Raban's, but Lucy is a 50 something single mother whose certainties and confusions ring true. Ultimately, each of the major character is compelling and treated sympathetically. There is dread in "Surveillance" and dis-ease, but the reason for it is deep-seated, suggested rather than discussed.…

Hardcover. First Ed; First Printing indicated. First Ed; First Printing indicated. Fine in Very Near Fine DJ: Book shows binding square and secure; text clean. DJ shows a very faint wrinkle at the inside corner of the lower front flap; else flawless; price unclipped. As New. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 275pp. Hardback with DJ. It takes a lot for a new writer to break into the crowded genre of British police procedurals. Even a good story may not be enough. But a good story with a badly damaged-but-redeemable Detective Chief Inspector might just do the trick. In this case, the damage is a doozie! DCI Mark Lapslie has just been called back from "indefinite sick leave" because he has a form of synaesthesia that causes him to taste sounds, e.g., his sergeant's voice tastes to him like lemon with a hint of grapefruit, but the voices of his children made him sick. And the voices of his colleagues at the busy station house taste like uncooked meat. Thus, he lives alone in as much silence as he can manage. He is called back to work in a last-ditch attempt to see if there is any way to create a useful place for him on the force before putting him on permanent leave. And he lands in the middle of a strange series of deaths of lonely old women. Coincidence? Murder? Serial killer? One leads to another and Lapslie and his sergeant always seem to be just a step behind. And the question nags: "Could a woman really visit so many horrors on these sweet, abandoned souls?" It makes you want to call up your elderly aunts and grandmothers to make sure they're OK and haven't been befriended by any overly solicitous do-gooders! I really like Lapslie and Co. and the writing is crisp, with a fine pace. Make no mistakes, though. This is also a tough murder mystery and not-so-nice things happen to presumably undeserving people. This is a good first mystery in what looks like a promising series. …

NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 304 pages. Hardback with DJ. What does landscape mean to us? How does it shape our sense of "rootedness" to place and connection to community? Can that sense and that connection enrich us in the same manner as having knowledge of our familial lineage? Landscape historian John Warfield Simpson sets out to answer these questions by following the journey of the great conservationist John Muir from his homeland along the North Sea coast in East Lothian County, Scotland, to his family's adopted home in the fields and forests of Marquette County, Wisconsin. Along the way he discovers much about himself; and we, in turn, can learn much about ourselves. In 1849 the Muirs immigrated from East Lothian to the wilds of central Wisconsin in search of religious and economic opportunity. What concept of land did they and millions of others from the Old World leave behind, and what did they find in their New World homes? Simpson physically retraces the Muirs' journey, as he delves into the meaning and importance of place. He speaks with estate owners and tenant farmers in Scotland who have centuries-long ties to the land they own or work; to Wisconsin farmers for whom one hundred years measures a profound connection to place; and to Native Americans working to reclaim the land they lost to white pioneers like the Muirs and to the author's own Scottish ancestors. Among all of these people Simpson discovers a powerful link between personal and communal history, and a deep connection to the land on which they have been played out. Time and history, landscape and community, are tightly intertwined, Simpson learns. Roots matter, he discovers, in his adopted home of Cockburnspath, Berwickshire, Scotland. First Edition [2002]; First Printing indicated.…

The interviews are wonderful and Miller is not only a unique stage director for theater and opera but a fine interviewer as well. The Geertz interview is worth the price of the book. The other interviews are essential reading for people interested in Miller's unique views on theater and life. I've used it for years in my teaching and my study of character. Each of the interviews are interesting and unique.as unique as Miller's view of the works for the stage have been over the years. They ought to bring out a second edition if nothing else, to keep these excellent interviews available in the world. This is a must for people of the stage and opera world and it's a big help for an approach to Indigenous Art as well. (See the Geertz Interview). …

Conceived in Jamaica and possibly of mixed race, Elizabeth Marsh (1735~1785) traveled farther and was more intimately affected by developments across the globe than the vast majority of men. She was the first woman to publish in English on Morocco, and the first to carry out extensive explorations in eastern and southern India. A creature of multiple frontiers, she spent time in London, Menorca, Rio de Janeiro, and the Cape of Africa. She speculated in Florida land, was caught up in the French and Indian War, was linked to voyages to the Pacific, and was enmeshed as victim or owner in three different systems of slavery. She was also a crucial part of far larger histories. Marsh's experiences would have been impossible without her links to the Royal Navy, the East India Company, imperial warfare, and widening international trade. To this extent, her career illumines shifting patterns of Western power and overseas aggression. Yet the unprecedented expansion of connections across continents occurring during her lifetime also ensured that her ideas and personal relationships were shaped repeatedly by events and people beyond Europe: by runaway African slaves; Indian weavers and astronomers; Sephardic Jewish traders; and the great Moroccan sultan, Sidi Muhammad, who schemed to entrap her. Many biographies remain constrained by a national framework, while global histories are often impersonal. By contrast, in this dazzling and original book, Linda Colley moves repeatedly and questioningly between vast geopolitical transformations and the intricate detail of individual lives. This is a global biography for our globalizing times. …

Jacket has faint wear along edges and a shallow crease on the inside back flap. Dust spotting to edges of pages. 327 pages. originally published in Swedish as Rapport Fran Medelsvensk Stad: Vasteras. The twelve Swedes who tell their stories in this book give a more realistic picture of a Middle Way that failed. they include retired, middle-aged and younger persons who have spent their lives at all kinds of common labor: farmers, housewives, fishermen, lumberjacks, maids, truckers, and factory workers. Emergening from the collective biography is a remarkalble history of twentieth-century Sweden- the story of rubanization and modernization, from the viewpoint of working people who are traditionally suspicious of bureaucracies and the bigwigs who make the decisions. Slowly, Kallberg feels, this basic distrust is turning to rebellion, for while the standard of living has risen rapidly, inequalities in Sweden have remained, or grown worse.…
