Book Condition: Near Fine; light shelfwear. DJ: Very Good; Price Clipped; light suntoning to spine; closed tears at head; several oil smudges on the…rear panel. Gold cloth boards and spine with bright black lettering on the spine and front board with Indian design on the front board. Indian symbols as endpapers. Clean internals. Inner hinges are sound and not split. 209 pp 8vo. The Yahi, a Native American tribe, lived peacefully in California for hundreds of years--until they were violently wiped out by the invading white man in the late 1800s. Only a few bold Yahi escaped into hiding, among them the man who became known as Ishi, and this is the story of how they survived over the course of 40 years of hiding. Soon, one by one, the last of the Yahi died--until Ishi was left alone, the sole survivor of a proud people. When Ishi stumbled into a small California mining town, the world learned his true story for the first time. This is the incredible story of the last hunter of the Yahi tribe, and how he brought to "civilization" all the courage, faith and strength of the Yahi Way of Life. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket. Ruth Robbins (illustrateur).

"Nicolas Sidjakov (December 16, 1924 â" June 20, 1993) was a Latvian-born Russian American commercial artist and illustrator. Sidjakov was born in Riga, Latvia. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, worked in advertising, and freelanced for the French movie industry. In 1954 he moved to the United States and continued to work in advertising. He also began to illustrate children's books, mainly picture books, beginning with The Friendly Beasts by Laura Nelson Baker, adapted from "The Friendly Beasts", an English Christmas carol. It was published in 1957 by Parnassus Press of Berkeley, California. Parnassus was a small press established only that year by Herman Schein, whose wife Ruth Robbins was a writer and illustrator. During the next several years it published at least three picture books created by Robbins, as writer, and Sidjakov. The first was Baboushka and the Three Kings, retelling the "Russian folktale about an old woman's endless search for the Christ child". For that work he received the annual Caldecott Medal from the American Library Association in 1961, as illustrator of the previous year's "most distinguished American picture book for children" (from Wikipedia); Color Illustrations; Unpaginated pages; True First Edition of this title DOES have illustrated paper covered boards, NOT illustrated cloth covered boards. Her work has focused on the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century, on autobiography, on literary theory and on particular writers such as Oscar Wilde and Arnold Bennett. Ruth's research interests centre on the late-Victorian period in English literature, especially the literature of Decadence, and include the writings of Oscar Wilde, Arthur Symons and Vernon Lee - her book Pater to Forster, 1873-1924 (2003) deals with literature written in the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century period. Her recent book Oscar Wilde (2011) revisits her interests in the fin de siècle; additionally she is co-author of a book on the British Short Story (with Emma Liggins and Andrew Maunder, 2010)."
