Hard Cover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First Edition. Dust jacket complete except price clipped. Black cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. Photographs. 172 pages clean and tight. This text concentrates specifically on the various types of hostile action committed against commercial aircraft from the earliest days of air travel right up to the present day. It provides a detailed reference, presenting the information in a factual, readable format. Each entry lists the date, airline, aircraft serial number, location, details of the action, and reasons if known. The book covers incidents such as the first proven case of aerial sabotage involving a United Air Lines Boeing 247 in March 1933, and obscure incidents such as the hijack on 16 September 1969 of a Turkish Airline Viscount turboprop by a lone man protesting Turkish travel restrictions. Other examples include tragedies like the suicide and mass murder on a Pacific Southwest Airlines flight on 7 December 1987 when a dismissed staff member went berserk on board, and fake attacks such as the Iberia DC-10 wide-bodied jet airliner hijacked on 26 July 1996 with the aid of a hoax bomb. Size: Sm 4to.…

Hardcover. Etat : VG+. Etat de la jaquette : VG+. 1st. Much has been written about the WWII bomber offensive mounted against Germany by the RAF, but much less about the top secret technological developments aimed at reducing the heavy losses sustained by the attacking aircraft at the hands of the German defences. In 1943 100 Group of the RAF was formed to integrate the units operating an electronic combat and intelligaence war against the Luftwaffe and German anti-aircraft defences. Radar, radio and spoofs were among the weapons ranged against the efficient German night fighters and guns. As one side gained a technological advantage this was quickly countered by the other and thus the conflict was finely balanged, almost to the end of hostilities. This battle, confined mainly to the night skies, has been little publicised and this detailed account follows it from both side, with many first hand-accounts as well as tracking the various electronic devices and aircraft used. This a first edition of 1996. 232 pages including three appendices and index, b/w photos throughout, with some drawings, diagrams, tables etc. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, internally excellent, no inscriptions. Colour art/pictorial DJ also VG+. Photos, Drawings, Diagrams etc (illustrateur).…

Hardcover. Etat : VG. Etat de la jaquette : VG. 1st. For more than a century from 1857 ships of the Union and Castle lines provided the vital communications link beween Great Brirain and South Africa. Contracts with the governments of both countries for the important carriage of mails created competition between the two and this was an major factor in the formation of Union-Castle Line as one company, from the competitors, in 1900. Union-Castle became iconic in the carriage of mail, passsengers and cargo and famous for building many beautifully proportioned ships, including a number in the liner age dominated by multi-funnel ships, The line also operated cargo vessels alongside its liner services. Like so many famous shippling lines, Union-Castle fell victim to tthe rise of jet travel for passengers and containers for cargo and in 1977 it ceased trading. While most of its ships sailed via the west coast of Africa and serviced major South African ports, others transited the Mediterranean, Red Sea and the East Coat of the African continant. This fine book covers the introduction of the two lines to service, their fierce competition for mail contracts, the eventual merger, the two World Wars and dealing with the changing shipping technologies and other challenges of the years leading to the line's closure. A thorough and in-depth study of one othe great shipping lines. First edition from Patrick Stephens of 1994, 180 pages including four appendices, bibliography, acknowledgements, index and subscribers list. This a little-used ex-library copy, illustrated throughout with b/w and colour photos, colour art including commissioned paintings by Peter Bilas, many document reproductions, colour page at back showing company badges of rank, cut-away accommodation diagramp of Pendennis Castle, flags and funnels, colour map showing line routes, decorated e/papers.
