When she was launched in 1843 she was twice the size of any previous ship and her revolutionary design heralded a complete break with traditional ship construction. As is the case for many historic ships, however, there is a surprising shortage of informative and well illustrated guides, for reference during a visit or for research by enthusiasts - ship modellers, naval buffs, historians or students. This new series redresses the gap. Written by experts and containing more than 200 specially commissioned photographs, each title takes the reader on a superbly illustrated tour of the ship, from bow to stern and deck by deck. Significant parts of the vessel - for example, the propeller, steering gear, engine and accommodation - are given detailed coverage both in words and pictures, so that the reader has at hand the most complete visual record and explanation of the ship that exists. In addition, the importance of the ship, both in her own time and now as a museum vessel, is explained, while her design and build, and her career prior to restoration and exhibition are all described. No other books offer such superb visual impact and detailed information as the Seaforth Historic Ship Series - a truly groundbreaking concept bringing the ships of our past vividly to life. Did generals have no better idea than to throw thousands of men against impregnable defences to make a gap for cavalry to ride through, knee-to-knee? Was World War I the most deadly in history? The mythology which surrounds the 1914-1918 war to this day embraces all these myths and more. This book argues that the truth can be approached only by looking at that war in the light of the others which really resemble it - the American Civil War and World War II. These three were the life-and-death struggles fought with the technology of the first Industrial Revolution. What are the links between Abraham Lincoln, David Lloyd George, Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt? What connects Robert E. Lee, Marshal Foch and General Douglas MacArthur? What is the inner nature of the wars in which they all took part? These questions and others are addressed here by John Terraine. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. 'Briggs is an engaging and amiable guide though the mysteries of wartime cryptography .a fascinating account of an outstanding young man and his time at a quite remarkable institution.' Roger Moorhouse in BBC History magazine Lord Briggs has long been regarded as one of Britain's most important historians. However, until the publication of this remarkable book, he had never written about his time at Bletchley Park. Briggs himself did not tell his wife about his wartime career until the 1970s and his parents died without ever knowing about their son's contribution to the war effort. In this meticulously researched account he finally reveals the details of his life in Hut Six working as a codebreaker alongside Alan Turing and Gordon Welchman. In addition to discussing the progress of the Allies' codebreaking efforts and its impact on the war, Lord Briggs considers what the Germans knew about Bletchley and how they reacted to revelatory memoirs about the Enigma machine, which were not published until the 1970s. Packed with fascinating anecdotes, this is the gripping, revelatory story of an extraordinary young man in an extraordinary place.

A female thief, with four husbands, a lover and, reportedly, over twelve children, is arrested and tried for the murder of her step-son in 1872, turning the small village of West Auckland in County Durham upside down. Other bodies are exhumed and when they are found to contain arsenic, she is suspected of their murder as well. The perpetrator, Mary Ann Cotton, was tried and found guilty and later hanged on 24 March 1873 in Durham Goal. It is claimed she murdered over twenty people and was the first female serial killer in England. With location photographs and a blow by blow account of the trial, this book challenges the claim that Mary Ann Cotton was the 'The West Auckland Borgia', a title given to her at the time. It sets out her life, trial, death and the aftermath and also questions the legal system used to convict her by looking at contemporary evidence from the time and offering another explanation for the deaths. The book also covers the lives of those left behind, including the daughter born to Mary Ann Cotton in Durham Goal. The subterranean world of vice is catalogued here. Prostitution is covered, of course, but also public immorality of all kinds, intimidation, racketeering, blackmail and official corruption, including scandals implicating the Brighton police. Within six months the kingdom lay in pieces. A full military campaign, known as the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 was required to ensure its demise. The British High Commissioner in South Africa, Sir Henry Bartle Frere, believed that the robust and economically self-reliant Zulu kingdom was a threat to this policy. In December 1878 he picked a quarrel with the Zulu king, Cetshwayo kaMpande, in the belief that the Zulu army - armed primarily with shields and spears - would soon collapse in the face of British Imperial might. The war began in January 1879. Three columns of British troops under the command of Lt. Gen. Lord Chelmsford invaded Zululand. Almost immidiately, the war went badly wrong for the British. On 22 January, the Centre Column, under Lord Chelmsford's personal command, was defeated at Isandlwana mountain. In one of the worst disasters of the Colonial era, over 1300 British troops and their African allies were killed. In the aftermath of Isandlwana, the Zulu reserves mounted a raid on the British border post at Rorke's Drift, which was held by just 145 men. After ten hours of ferocious fighting, the Zulu were driven off. Eleven of the defenders of Rorke's Drift were awarded the Victoria Cross. These are the best-known episodes of the war, and Rorke's Drift inspired the classic film Zulu, which established Michael Caine as a star. However, the author delves deeply into the causes of the war, the conditions during it and the aftermath. Completely re-set, this is one of the most highly-regarded books on the period. An horrific crash involving five trains in which 230 died and 246 were injured, it remains the worst disaster in the long history of Britain's rail network. The location was the isolated signal box at Quintinshill, on the Anglo-Scottish border near Gretna; the date, 22 May 1915, Most of the casualties were Scottish soldiers on their way to fight in the Gallipoli campaign. Territorials setting off for war on a distant battlefield, they were cut down instead on home soil - victims, it was said, of serious incompetence and a shoddy regard for procedure in the signal box, Two signalmen were sent to prison. But startling new evidence reveals that the failures which led to the disaster were far more complex and wide-reaching than signalling negligence. The Quintinshill Conspiracy - The Shocking True Story Behind Britain's Worst Rail Disaster, exposes what really happened - and why. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Perhaps you have thought of visiting the battlefields nearby and the monuments that commemorate them, and want to find out exactly where your ancestor served and what part he played in the four great battles that took place there? So many British soldiers served in Flanders during the long struggle to defend the Ypres Salient and to break out of it that there is a good chance that your ancestor was there at some stage of the war. This practical and informative handbook is an ideal guide to the struggle for the city and the stories of the men who took part in it. It is also a fascinating introduction to researching the Great War as a whole. Simon Fowler outlines the course of the fighting around the city and he introduces the most important historical resources that you can use to explore the history for yourself. The book identifies the key sources for family historians, including at The National Archives and the Imperial War Museum, together with the many resources online that researchers can turn to. There is also advice on the literature, archives, museums and monuments that may help you to gain an insight into your ancestor's story. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. In a superb companion volume to her best-selling book Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths in Guernsey, Glynis Cooper turns her attention to the dark side of the past in Jersey. And there is no shortage of shocking stories to tell - crimes of passion and despair, cases of murder, deceit and pure malice, opportunistic killings and coldly premeditated acts of wickedness that are as disturbing today as they were in their own time. For this journey into a neglected area in Jersey's history she has selected a revealing series of cases dating from the medieval period to the present day. She recalls the torture and execution of four female witches, the murderous outcome of a clash with Norman sheep stealers, a woman who married her husband's murderer and wreckers who preyed on Spanish treasure ships. And among the sensational episodes from more recent times are a schoolboy who raped a woman, the suicide of a jilted bride, the murder of French political refugees, a French general who was ruined by his lady love and corrupt officers who disgraced the Victorian police force. The human dramas Glynis Greenman describes are often played out in the most commonplace of circumstances, but others are so odd as to be stranger than fiction. Her fascinating account of Jersey's secret history will be compelling reading for anyone who is interested in the flaws in human nature. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. He was not going to play the chairman's role, adjudicating between the competing claims of the ministers below him. He was going to get his hands dirty and take direct personal control of the day to day running of military policy. This, though, meant that he alone would be responsible for the success or failure of Britain's war effort. It also meant that he would be faced with many monumental challenges and utterly crucial decisions upon which the fate of Britain and the free world rested. One of his first agonising decisions was how to respond to the collapse of France, and the danger posed to Britain's survival should the powerful French fleet fall into German hands. When he ordered Admiral Sommerville to sink the French fleet at Mers-el-Kebir, he knew that France might be turned against Britain, but that act demonstrated to the world that he was determined to wage war whatever the cost may be'. With the limited resources available to the UK, Churchill had to decided where his country's priorities lay. Should he concentrate on the defence of the realm or take the war to the enemy - and where should any offensive action be focused? Did Egypt and the war in North Africa take precedence over Singapore and the UK's empire in the East? How much support should be offered to the Soviet Union? How much of the direction of the war could he allow to be dictated by the United States? In this insightful investigation into Churchill's conduct during the Second World War, Allen Packwood, the Director of the Churchill Archives Centre, enables the reader to share the agonies and uncertainties faced by Churchill at each crucial stage of the war. How Churchill responded to each challenge is analysed in great detail and the conclusions the author draws are as uncompromising as those made by Britain's wartime leader as he negotiated his country through its darkest days. Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : Very Good. Peter C. Smith presents us here with the second release in his visually splendid Cruise Ships series. Whilst his first book concerned itself with the large-scale ships currently cruising through our seas (those weighing 40,000 GT and more) this volume focusses on the other end of the market; the ships that weigh in at less than 40,000 GT, but which are often much more stylish and aesthetically pleasing than their larger-scale counterparts. The elegant interiors and luxurious features on display in today's vast fleet of cruise liners remain unrecorded in all but holiday brochures. This book carries on in the tradition of Peter's last release, giving a complete overview of the best of these ships, the cream of the crop, so to speak. Each colour profile includes external and interior views of the featured ship. Details of the design, building and service history of each vessel are provided with vital statistics of the ship and its facilities. This is a book of reference for maritime enthusiasts, would-be holiday cruisers and those who have been passengers. It serves as an impressive visual tribute to the best of the smaller scale fleet currently cruising globally. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : Fair. By December 1944, Britain was denuded of fighting troops. Every man capable of handling a rifle was needed at the front on the Continent. Behind them they had left the lame, middle-aged soldiers or unfit men, many of them engaged in guarding the 250,000 very fit young Germans who were now scattered throughout the British Isles in their POW cages. Even the most determined Nazis among them knew there was no escape - so why try? But since September 1944, when the first German paratroops had started arriving at the cages in large numbers, the mood of these "tame" POWs had begun to change. They had become more truculent and had set up networks of hard-core Nazis and fighting men ("the blacks", as they were called by their British guards), who really ruled the camps behind the backs of the British. For the German High Command in Berlin had infiltrated their agents into all the most important camps in the UK, and it was their task to plan a mass breakout which would coincide with the start of Hitler's last great offensive in the West - the Battle of the Bulge. But this would be no ordinary escape - it was one with a strategic purpose, for the plotters planned no less than a march on London in a determined attempt to capture the capital of the British Empire. This account of the episode is a tale of double-dealing and treachery, which caused intense alarm at that last Christmas of World War II, and which ended in murder and retribution. A readable copy of the book which may include some defects such as highlighting and notes. Cover and pages may be creased and show discolouration.

Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : Fine. In the nineteenth century, as towns grew, Britain became increasingly grimy. The causes of dirt and pollution were defined legally as 'nuisances' and, in 1835, the new local authorities very rapidly appointed an army of 'inspectors of nuisances'. This book is the inspectors' chronicle: it offers their eye-witness accounts and a plethora of details pertaining to the workings of the scrutinising Parliamentary Committees that were set up in an attempt to ease the struggles against filth. Inspectors battled untreated human excreta in rivers black as ink, as well as insanitary drinking water, home to tadpoles and portions of frogs so large that they blocked taps. They dealt with putrid animal carcases in cattle markets and slaughter-houses, not to mention the unabated smoke from mill chimneys that covered towns with a thick layer of black grime. Boggle Hole Pond was a source of drinking water full of dead dogs; ice cream was coated in bugs; stinking rotting crabs, poultry and pigeon smells polluted the air. Even the dead floating out of badly drained burial grounds were 'nuisances', leading to the practice of burning the remains of the dead. This is the history of a grimy century in the throes of the Industrial Revolution, illustrating the many ways in which the country responded to the ever growing demands of a new age of industry.

Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : Good. Huddersfield's famous mills played a crucial role in the town's history and now they are a vital element in its heritage. In this fascinating survey Vivian Teesdale documents the mills themselves- some have been demolished whilst others have changed use and a few are still connected with the modern textile industry. Vivian also recalls the people who's livelihood depended on the mills - the owners, the mill workers and their families. Their combined efforts over generations created the prosperity and growth that gave birth to the town we see today, and this book gives a keen insight into their work and their lives. All kinds of mills are featured here - woollen, worsted, yarn spinners and shoddy. The people who worked ion them are brought vividly to life - where they lived, how much they earned, what their working conditions were like. Early union disputes are recalled giving a glimpse of the organised labour for which Huddersfield is so rightly famous. Some of the names may be familiar, if only because streets or buildings are named after them, others have long been forgotten, despite their influence on the town in the early days. But the era in Huddersfield's history that they represent, and the lost community of individuals and families who lives revolved around them, are well remembered here. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.
