So he turns to his only friend in the world: private investigator Philip Marlowe. Marlowe is willing to help a man down on his luck, but later Lennox commits suicide in Mexico and things start t…o turn nasty. In this extraordinary book, award~winning and New York Times best~selling writer John M. Barry examines the origins of these fault lines. What he finds is as relevant today as it was when they first emerged in the seventeenth century. The Washington Post said Barry's earlier book Rising Tide could "change the way we think." So can this one. At the center of the story lies Roger Williams, a pioneer in religious freedom, the first man to describe individual liberty in modern terms, and the man who created in America the first government on earth informed by those beliefs. It is set against the background of monumental upheavals in intellectual, political, religious, and social life. In England these led to the writing of the King James Bible, then civil war, revolution, and the beheading of a king. They led in America to efforts to establish an entirely new kind of society, one that would be a beacon unto the world. The question was what that beacon would signal, and what its light would shine upon. Roger Williams's thought developed not from studying treatises but at risk of his life, as participant in the tumult. His mentor, Edward Coke, the greatest jurist in English history and the man who decreed, "Every Englishman's home is as his castle," burned into him concepts of individual rights and limits on state power, as well as a deep understanding of the law. Coke went to the Tower of London for his stand. Coke's mortal enemy, Francis Bacon, the father of the modern scientific method as well as King James's chancellor, convinced Williams that one should understand the world not through predisposition, logic, or belief, but only from evidence. These notions, catalyzed by Williams's own spirit of independence and interpretation of Scripture, produced a point of view that John Quincy Adams later called "altogether revolutionary." Williams's fundamental ideas came to fruition in America, where he collided with another towering figure in the seventeenth~century landscape: John Winthrop. The first governor of Massachusetts, Winthrop preached the building of a "city upon a hill"~a New Jerusalem on the new continent. He believed Christianity must inform the state, that the world would copy this model, and woe unto America if it strayed from that vision. Williams, a devout Puritan minister, also believed that America could be a model, but a model of liberty that required church and state to separate entirely one from the other. One hundred fifty years before Thomas Jefferson, Williams called for a "wall of separation" between the two. He was even more original in his belief in individual rights: he was the first in the world to insist that government received its power from and should be controlled by its citizens. As obvious a concept as that seems today, it was revolutionary when he articulated it. Massachusetts found Williams's views so dangerous that it banished him and threatened to hang him if he ever returned. Williams founded Providence as a refuge for those persecuted for their "conscience." In the chaos of this settlement of rebels, he then struggled to define the appropriate powers.

Knowledge is therefore dynamic, evolving as organisms interact with their environment and face new challenges.Instinct and Learning: Instincts are innate behavioral patterns that have evolved because they reliably increase fitness. They represent a form of pre-programmed knowledge encoded in the genome. However, instincts alone are often insufficient in complex or changing environments. Learning allows organisms to modify behavior based on experience, effectively extending the adaptive potential of instinctual responses. Plotkin emphasizes that the interplay between instinct and learning forms a continuum, where some behaviors are rigidly inherited while others are flexible and shaped by environmental feedback. Evolution of Intelligence: Intelligence can be seen as an advanced form of adaptive knowledge. It enables organisms to predict, plan, and manipulate their environment beyond immediate instinctual responses. Plotkin proposes a three-dimensional theory of knowledge, where intelligence evolves as a mechanism to integrate instinctual knowledge with experiential learning, allowing for problem-solving in novel situations. This perspective frames intelligence as a product of evolutionary pressures, where cognitive abilities are selected for their contribution to survival and reproductive success. Integration of Adaptation, Instinct, and Knowledge: The evolution of knowledge involves a Darwinian process: variation in cognitive traits, selection for traits that improve fitness, and retention of successful strategies. Instinct provides a baseline of adaptive behavior, while learning and intelligence allow for flexible responses to environmental complexity. Together, these mechanisms illustrate that knowledge is not static but emerges from the interaction between genetic inheritance, environmental challenges, and cognitive development.
