Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. In the aftermath of the twentieth centurys raging warfare, attempts were made to create an environment in which new relationships between European nations could be built around a common identity. Yet, in the twenty-first century, identity conflicts are gaining a new intensity in parts of the continent. In the analysis of some sub-state nationalist parties, the prospect of European Union membership reduces the economic and political risks of secession. Meanwhile, to the east, any moves towards expansion of EU membership are viewed by Russia not as a peace project but as acts of aggression. This volume assembles a series of comparative and single-area case studies drawn from different academic disciplines. While interrogating the history of identity conflict in the European context, an essential component of efforts to reduce such conflicts in the future, the authors bring an array of methodological approaches to analyses of the many intersecting political, cultural and economic factors that influence the formation of nationhood and identity, and the resurgence of nationalism. Interrogating the history of identity conflict in the European context, the authors bring an array of methodological approaches to analyses of the many intersecting political, cultural and economic factors that influence the formation of nationhood and identity, and the resurgence of nationalism in Europe in the early 21st Century. Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. Catholic schools continue to be a popular choice for parents, including many who do not profess the Catholic faith. One of the distinguishing features of Catholic schools is the importance they ascribe to Religious Education (RE). This volume draws together researchers from Ireland and the UK to bring into focus the complex range of issues around the teaching of RE. Within the public sphere, there is considerable discussion about the role of education in passing on and engaging with religious matters. The essays gathered here make an important contribution to an ongoing debate about the place of RE in Catholic schools within pluralist societies.Given that almost all Catholic schools are publicly funded, the questions explored in this volume are not only of interest to advocates of Catholic education and those involved in researching and teaching RE, but are also relevant and topical for Irish and British society more widely. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. After the demise of Czechoslovakia in March 1939, the Jewish population fell victim to Nazi persecution. Hoping to find a safe haven elsewhere in the world, some Czechoslovak Jews turned to Australia to seek refuge. This book focuses on their struggles to survive in life-threatening situations and their efforts to reach the safety of the distant continent.Although the German occupation of Czechoslovakia has been a subject of extensive academic debate, the role of the Australian government in this international event has thus far not been examined. This book evaluates the impact on Australia of policies pursued by Europes leading politicians with regard to Czechoslovakia that ultimately failed to prevent the outbreak of the Second World War.Central to the book is a discussion of Australias policy towards the admission of Jewish refugees from Czechoslovakia. Drawing on archival sources as well as original interviews conducted with former refugees from Czechoslovakia, the author offers insights into the lives and experiences of these Jewish refugees down under. At the same time, the book sheds light on Australias involvement in one of the defining moments of the twentieth century. Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. In English and many other languages the name 'Kon-Tiki' has become a byword for adventure and the exotic. The journey of the Kon-Tiki from Peru to Polynesia in 1947 became one of the founding myths of the postwar world. In the voyage of six Scandinavians and a parrot on a balsa raft across the Pacific Ocean the classic journey of discovery was re-invented for generations to come. Kon-Tiki spoke of heroism, masculinity, free-spirited rebellion against scientific dogmatism, and the promise of an attainable exotic world, while it updated these mythological staples to fit the times. After years of relentless media exploitation of the 101-day raft journey, Heyerdahl emerged as the protagonist in a legend that helped to create a new postwar West. A Hero for the Atomic Age tells the story of how Heyerdahl organized an expedition to sail a balsa raft from Callao in Peru to the Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia, and explains how he turned this physical crossing into an epic narrative that became imbued with a universal appeal. The book also addresses, for the first time, the problematic nature of Heyerdahl's theory that a white culture-bearing race had initiated all the world's great civilizations. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. This book examines the political, cultural, and theological metamorphoses of St. Francis of Assisi, tracing how a figure which today is associated with peace, nature, humility, and poverty served as a pillar of Italian Fascist political religion during the years of the regime. Through archival research, close textual analysis, and historiographical critique, the study uncovers the ways in which Fascist intellectuals, Franciscan friars, and state propaganda appropriated Franciss image to construct a national saint capable of inspiring sacrifice, hierarchy, and colonial ambition. A key argument of the book is that post-war Italy largely erased the memory of Franciss "Fascist paint," enabling a new pacifist mythology to take hold without confronting the saints earlier ideological uses. Through analyses of cinema by Rossellini, Zeffirelli, and Cavani and more, this book maps this postwar transition and its political stakes. Ultimately, the study illuminates the entanglement of religion and politics in modern Italy, interrogating how a single symbolic figure could embody both Clerico-Fascist nationalism and radical pacifism, and what this duality reveals about Italian cultural memory and its persistent search for absolution. "The afterlife of Saint Francis may be, if anything, even more fascinating than his life on earth. Every age has believed it could find in him something that struck a deep chord and made him seem contemporary. Amanda Minervinis book examines what at first appears to be the most implausible and grotesque of pairingsthe equation of Saint Francis with Mussolini in Fascist Italy. Yet, by the end, we discover that even our own image of Francis as a pacifist and environmentalist is an anachronistic product of myth making." Alessandro Barbero, author of San Francesco (2025)"The conflation of religion and politics in Italian Fascism is a truism that few would challenge today. Tracing the transfiguration of St. Francis from the patron saint of Clerico-Fascism to a neorealist icon of the bravo italiano, Minervinis excellent book reminds us that, in Italy, the sacralization of politics is always accompanied by an equally effective politicization of Catholic figures." Claudio Fogu, Professor of Italian Studies and Director of the Italian Studies Program at University of California, Santa Barbara This book examines the political, cultural, and theological metamorphoses of St. Francis of Assisi, tracing how a figure which today is associated with peace, nature, and poverty served as a pillar of Italian Fascist political religion during the years of the regime. Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. This fantastic book investigates the proliferation, power and changing nature of online feminist activism. The book critically focuses on the challenges and risks of online feminist activism, as well as the capacity of activist campaigns to achieve real, transformative change. Casey and Watson argue that although feminists should harness the power of hashtag and celebrity feminism, there are tensions, inequalities and power imbalances within feminism which must be navigated. This book is a must-read, especially for activists, academics, victim-survivors and policymakers. It makes an important contribution to contemporary debates about the role of feminist digital activism across three key areas: raising public awareness of gender-based violence, contributing to cultural change, including changing norms, attitudes and behaviours, and shaping understandings of how gender, race, sexuality and other markers of difference intersect to shape experience. The book is a timely reminder that feminist activism is an important piece of the puzzle to preventing gender-based violence.(Professor Nicola Henry, RMIT University) Hashtag Feminisms is powerful. It is potent. It is engaging. This book offers momentum and transformation. It provides a pathway to our future, through courage, reflection, kindness and compassion.(Professor Tara Brabazon, Professor of Cultural Studies (Flinders University) / Professor of Higher Education (Massey University)) Broad-scale feminist consciousness continues to gain ground globally, as witnessed by the Womens March, #MeToo, and #EnoughIsEnough in Australia. Aided by hashtag activism and media feminists, feminist campaigns have highlighted the need for change in cultural attitudes to issues such as gender-based violence. This book focuses on feminist campaigning in the Australian context over the last decade, contending the increased velocity of feminist discourse in the Australian mediascape represents a critical opportunity for larger scale, feminist-led mass awareness campaigns. The authors ask: what is it about hashtag activism and celebrity feminisms that may be most useful to (some) Australian feminists, and what are the challenges and potential risks of these forms of activism? Does such activism have substantive political or material effects? Or is this type of activism just echo chamber activism, which does little to address structural inequalities and, if so, might anything be salvaged? This book focuses on feminist activist campaigns in the Australian context over the last decade, contending that the increased velocity of feminist discourse and engagement in the Australian mediascape represents a critical nexus for potential larger scale, feminist-led mass awareness campaigns.
