Between them they commissioned extraordinary works of art and architecture, and the city was restructured in one of the greatest urban development projects in history. Streets, piazzas, boulevards, and vistas were built, creating a new Rome in the image of an ideal heavenly and secular city. Rome itself became a work of art.".

It offers a clear and comprehensive study of the three major artistic traditions of eastern Asia~ Indian, Chinese, and Japanese~as well as a cogent overview of their interrelationships and their influences on the neighboring traditions of Southeast Asia and Indonesia, Central Asia, and Korea. Copious illustrations reveal the evolution of styles and artistic traditions, providing in themselves an unrivaled panorama of Far Eastern achievement in art. This new fourth edition of A History of Far Eastern Art takes full account of the astonishing recent archaeological discoveries, as these have confirmed, modified, or overturned previous interpretations. Many of these new finds are included among the hundreds of reproductions. Also new are the concise historical introductions that begin each chapter, providing a political and social setting for artistic process and development. All this is accomplished with admirable clarity of arrangement and succinctness of presentation. Within a chronological organization in which patterns of continuity and change are traced and interpreted, all mediums are discussed, with particular attention to those in which prevailing styles of each time and place have been expressed: sculpture and architecture in India and Southeast Asia, painting and ceramics in China and Korea, painting and decorative arts in Japan, and sculpture in religious art everywhere. A general bibliography lists all major works and periodicals in the field; it is followed by a specialized bibliography for each chapter. Chronologies, maps, and a pronunciation guide for the Indian, Japanese, and Chinese (pinyin and Wade~Giles) names and terms assist the beginning student. The detailed index, which provides ready access to specific information, cites all Chinese names and terms in both pinyin and Wade~Giles spellings. Together, text, illustrations, and appendices make A History of Far Eastern Art a unique general introduction to its field and also a basic reference work for advanced scholars.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good -. No Jacket. 1st Edition. At the time of his death, Harvard-trained art historian H. W. ("Peter") Janson (1913-1982) was the acknowledged master of the domain for both general and professional audiences. Longstanding chairman and professor of the Department of Art at New York University, Janson won numero…us awards for his art scholarship, but nothing did more to introduce the masses to the subject matter than his titanic textbook, History of Art 1st published by Abrams in 1962. Wikipedia® states this 1962 publication was the 1st edition. Philip Grushkin designed this book. To successfully exploit the academic textbook market, a publisher and author must commit to scheduled revised editions and to develop the widest distribution they can obtain. Abrams worked with Prentice Hall to expand the number of colleges using the book and there are several editions of varying page length with this title. Revised editions were released into the 1980s. The copy for sale comes from the 3rd printing in August 1963 of the1962 edition, LCCN = 62-11620, with 572 pages. It is a large 4to (near Folio) sized hardcover with gray cloth board, black shadowboxes on spine and front with gold lettering, but no dust jacket. That means it is big. It is also heavy, 5.25 lbs. It was carried to class. Book was printed in Germany and bound in Holland. No ISBN nor MSR. Prior owner's name dated September 1963 written on ffep. This copy was studied evidenced by often underlining and notes written in margins throughout text. Somewhat distracting, but original text is legible. Thanks for looking. Prior Owner Name No Value.
