New Mexico housed more than 10,000 POWs in two large base camps at Roswell and Lordsburg and at 19 branch camps throughout the state. The German and Italian POWs were used in agriculture as farm labor and received their pay from the US Army. This is the story of the POWs, their life, the camps, and their organization and operation during the war years. A clean new copy.

Based on personal interviews by Betty Huning Hinton, this is the biography of Elizabeth Parkinson Simpson who was Chairperson of the Home Economics Department at the University of New Mexico from 1918-1952. Sara Reynolds Hall was built specifically for Mrs. Simpson's Home Economics Department. Betty Huning Hinton taught history in the Albuquerque Public Schools for more than 25 years. Custer, the mid 1880s when Fort Riley became the home to the Army's Cavalry and Light Artillery Schools, to the advent of WWI. Accompanying letter (dated 1996) gives a detailed account of the provenance of this piece as well as an overview of the relationship between Winters, Meem, Glenway Westcott and Monroe Wheeler among others. Book and original cover envelope sent to Gullans in 1973. Letter dated 1996 from a previous sale by a rare book dealer SIGNED, "FOR CHARLES FROM JANET - IN FRIENDSHIP - YOU CAN KEEP THIS ONE - / 1/3/73" Early Chicago friends Yvor Winters, John Gaw Meem, Monroe Wheeler, and Glenway Wescott form an unexpected constellation of American cultural influence-Winters, the stern poet-critic whose exacting standards shaped generations of writers; Meem, the architect who reimagined the Southwest through his lyrical Pueblo Revival designs; Wheeler, the quietly commanding curator who helped define modern taste at MoMA; and Wescott, the novelist whose elegant, emotionally charged prose captured the subtleties of human longing. Though their fields differed, all four shared a devotion to craft, clarity, and a belief that art-whether in words, buildings, exhibitions, or stories-could refine the way people see the world.
