Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The evolution of a remarkable African American family--the Caytons--is a brilliantly told tale set primarily in Seattle and Chicago. The Caytons lived a true American saga, illuminating the black and white experience in the United States and the troubled, tortuous course of race relations.Severa…l generations of the Horace and Susie Cayton family spanned the period from the Civil War to the present. They were a distinguished family, conscious of their historical heritage and distinct identity. The Caytons sought to define themselves in relation to their family traditions and to society as a whole. In the process, they attained financial success and influence both nationally and regionally. They published newspapers, authored books and articles, held public office, worked for civil and human rights, and established relationships with major black and white community and cultural leaders in America and France. They also faced racial discrimination and duress, business and professional failures, and even poverty. And some struggled against the personal challenges of alcoholism, depression, and drug addiction. Yet the force of the family legacy--of being "a Cayton"--impelled most of them to make significant contributions and accomplish high achievements. They speak to us with deep insight about our society--sharpening our understanding of the past, and enhancing our sense of individual and collective identity in the modern age. Experience the saga of a distinguished African American family that played a significant role in U.S. history from the Civil War to the present. Residing primarily in Chicago, San Francisco, and Seattle, several generations of the Horace and Susie Cayton family faced racial discrimination, professional failure, poverty, alcoholism, depression, and drug addiction. Yet the force of the family legacy impelled most of them to make significant contributions to American society. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. River Earth is a personal exploration of family and community in and around the rivers of the Pacific Northwest. In these poignant essays, John Pierce probes the lifelong impact of a teenage boy's loss of a father, and how it led his own sons to a life on the river. He lifts the covers from the…seeming tranquility of north Idaho's woods to reveal the personal impact of a friend's fear of racial violence. His mother's heroic lingering death forces him to confront who he is--while in the midst of a relationship that had lain dormant. Nighttime visits by Johnny Cash, two-foot long fish that don't exist, and a son who hears music in his head while wandering along Idaho's Jeru Creek all enliven and enrich this moving yet humorous book. Love, anger, wonder, a sense of place, of family, and of community, all emerge in this collection of evocative autobiographical excursions. River Earth is a personal exploration of family and community in and around the rivers of the Pacific Northwest. Love, anger, wonder, and a sense of place all emerge in this collection of poignant, often funny pieces. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability. Hockenhull, Jo (illustrateur).

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. In this beautiful coming-of-age memoir, Alice Koskela captures that peculiar mix of innocence and ruthlessness which is childhood--that time when we know far less than we think we do, and far more than any adult might guess. The Pull of Moving Water describes the cultural simmering of the 1950s…and the explosion of the 1960s from the vantage point of a girl growing up inside those years, yet impossibly removed from anything that seems to matter. She's stuck on a farm in southern Idaho, a state so remote and uncool that Dick Clark makes fun of it on American Bandstand. The Pull of Moving Water is stunning in its honesty--about growing up gentile among the Mormons, about what the Cold War did to children, particularly those in the path of mysterious, powdery "bomb rains" that blew in from the Nevada tests, about the cruelty of a breast-obsessed culture for adolescent girls. It will pull you in and take you back, a gracefully written story that recalls the joy and pain of childhood and of an era, lived out in a place that was not, after all, so far away. Koskela describes the cultural simmerings and explosions of the 1950s and 1960s from the vantage point of a girl on an Idaho farm--feeling impossibly removed from anything that seemed to matter. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. When Susan Landgraf received an Academy of American Poets' Laureate in 2020, her project proposal included teaching more than a dozen workshops on the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation that would culminate in a Muckleshoot poetry book. Landgraf sees writing as both opening oneself to vulnerability…and to a feeling of empowerment. She believes that poetry can save lives, and worked to facilitate a teaching environment that welcomed each voice. Her exercises, prompts, and discussions sparked creativity and critical thinking, and invited young people and elders to reflect on their history, culture, and current lives in a meaningful way.Ultimately, fifty-four poets--most from the Muckleshoot Tribal School--participated in the collection. Expressive and moving, their pieces are about searching and belonging. Loss and finding. The writers range from elementary school age to adult, but all share a common theme--a reaching back and a reaching forward--sometimes in the same poem. Their work highlights Muckleshoot history and culture, but also spotlights individual histories, lessons, and beliefs.Muckleshoot is the Native name for the prairie on which the 6.128 square-mile reservation was established in 1857. Federally recognized as descendants of the Duwamish and Upper Puyallup people who inhabited Central Puget Sound thousands of years before non-Indian settlement, approximately 3,600 people live on the reservation, making the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe one of the largest Native American tribes in Washington State. Fifty-four poets - most from the Muckleshoot Tribal School are represented in this collection. Expressive and moving, their pieces are about searching and belonging. Loss and finding. The writers range from elementary school age to adult, but all share a common theme - a reaching back and a reaching forward - sometimes in the same poem. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. One of the last blocks of unprotected wild country left in the Lower 48, the Clearwater Country in north-central Idaho "is a small place, not a large place to save," writes Charles Pezeshki. Serving as advocate as he chronicles this land and the people involved in efforts to preserve it, Pezeshk…i introduces us not only to a spectacular country, but also to the ordinary folks--a timber cruiser, a construction worker, an insurance salesman, a piano teacher--who labor against enormous odds to save it from the chain saw.Wild to the Last is a journey, both sublime and horrific, through a magnificent natural land, complete with wild, roaring rivers, old-growth forest, and snowy peaks. It is also a desperate call for help as one of the last wild places in America is clearcut--while the public remains largely unaware and apathetic. One of the last block of unprotected wild terrain left in the Lower 48, the Clearwater Country in north-central Idaho "is a small place to save," writes Charles Pezeshki. Serving as advocate as he chronicles this land and the people involved in efforts to preserve it, Pezeshki introduces us not only to a spectacular region, but also to the ordinary folks who labor against enormous odds to save it for posterity. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Desert Wings tells the contentious story of how the U.S. military and high-ranking federal and state politicians attempted to secure a bombing range in the fragile canyonlands of Idaho. In 1989, it was revealed that the U.S. Air Force planned to take over 1.5 million acres of the publicly held Ow…yhee Canyonlands in southwest Idaho. It would have been one of the largest military procurements of public land since WWII, but an unlikely coalition of environmentalists, ranchers, and Native Americans thwarted--though not entirely--the bombing range proponents.Reporter Niels Nokkentved goes beyond the headlines and into the politics and culture of environmental assessments and bureaucratic inertia. Desert Wings reveals surprising connections and behind-the-scenes machinations, as well as providing context for the Air Force's effort to round up as much western space as possible. Readers also will enjoy an insider's look at the geological history, wildlife biology, and human personalities of the region. Desert Wings tells the contentious story of how the U.S. military and high-ranking federal and state politicians attempted to secure a bombing range in the fragile canyonlands of southwest Idaho beginning in 1989. Nokkentved gives a riveting account of the events and the people involved in the controversy and its final resolution. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
