This book details the painting techniques of major European and American artists over almost 700 years from 1300 to 1980, from Giotto to Hockney and Le Witt. It is the work of a team of picture conservators and art historians, amalgamating three earlier works each cov…ering, respectively, the techniques of the Old Masters, the Impressionists, and Modern Masters (after 1905). The techniques of 77 artists over that period are examinded using over 100 master works. First edition, second Chartwell Printing. About 9 x 12 inches, 541 pages plus 16 pages of glossary, acknowledgements, index and bibliography. Profusely illustrated with hundreds of photos, diagrams and drawings. Bound in brown paper-covered boards with gold lettering on spine. Dustjacket's front panel shows reproduction of Monet's "Terrace at Sainte Adresse." Back panel lists the artists from each period whose work appears in text. All Dj lettering in black. Top edge of text is moderately foxed, spine shows single vertical crease, o/w boards and text are complete, clean and unmarked. Binding is tight and square. No noticeable damage or flaws such as bumped corners, dogearred pages or highlighted paragraphs. Not remaindered, not ex-library. Dustjacket shows some light soiling on back panel and spine, a single inch-long tear in top edge of back panel. Not price-clipped. Indispensable for anyone with more than a passing interest in what's under the surface of a fine painting.
