On the top of title page is written 'By Daniel Call', with the 'By' crossed-out with 2 lines. This signature matches perfectly Call's ownership signature on title page of a copy of Wy…the's 'Decisions of Cases in Virginia.' which is in the Wolf Law Library. Daniel Call (1765-1840) studied law with George Wythe and was the author of a 6 volume 'Reports of cases Argued and Adjudged in the Court of Appeals of Virginia' 1801. On front pastedown is ownership signature of Wm. F. Watson - he apparently wrote on ffep 'A treatise of Equity by Lord Gilbert', in a long passage in writing seeming to be Call's, he argues that this book is certainly not by Gilbert but Ballow, he cites a copy in his possession of the Dublin 1769 3rd ed. which has Lord Gilbert as author even though text is very similar to this 1737. Condition is Good+; Boards have water stains, corners worn, hinges repaired with brown paper tape, rear is holding, front cover detached retaining ffep, other than the noted writing, the text pages are unmarked with the exception of 2 marginal notes, some pages are lightly toned, some with marginal stains. RRGR.

Das Werk ist eine Gesellschaftssatire, verfasst von dem produktiven und seiner Zeit renommierten Schriftsteller Jean Puget de La Serre (1594-1665). - Die Illustrationen sind von dem engli…schen Kupferstecher John Payne, der in London tätig war und wohl ebenda Schüler von Simon u. Willem van de Passe gewesen ist. Er gilt als einer der ersten Vertreter des Linienstichs in England (ThB 26, 326). Das Titelbild zeigt ein in königliche Gewänder gekleidetes Skelett, dessen Fuß auf einer Erdkugel steht und das in seiner Hand ?The Mirrour Which Flatters Not? hält. - Seltene, erste Ausgabe. Es erschienen 1658, 1664 und 1673 ebnda weitere Ausgaben. Ab 1658 um einen Untertitel erweitert: `The mirrour which flatters not, concerning the contempt of the world, or the meditation of death, of King Philip of Macedon, Saladine, Adrian, and Alexander the Great`." Boileau… was an influential critic of French poetry and The Lutrin, ostensibly the first mock-heroic poem, which concerns the quarrel between two ecclesiastical dignitaries about where to place a lectern in a chapel, is sometimes said to have given Alexander Pope a model for The Rape of the Lock.
