In original buff printed stiff card boards, with variant title and edition statement on front and summary of contents on rear boards. Deckled edges. Recent paper spine, extremities worn and occasional foxing; otherwise a good copy. Illustrated by hand coloured folding map frontispiece, engraved Circulating Library advertisement (at end) and 7 Bewick-style vignettes in text, including title page. Decorated by endpiece vignette. Similar to Goulden 35-36 but the preface (Address) is dated 1820, the Advertisement, May 1821 and there is a list of lodging houses at the end. As Goulden observes, this Second Edition, originally published in 1818, appeared in 'a rash of reissues marked variously by cancel title pages, differently dated prefaces or cancel covers.' The second edition was a notably reduced version of the previous 1817 edition that John Clifford (1787-1843) had taken over from his uncle, Jasper Sprange.
