Rebacked most handsomely in a light brown calf leather, five raised bands to spine, bl…ind-stamped title to brown leather label at spine, perhaps incorporating original paneled calf boards, which appear sympathetic to/contemporary with the period (Miller, Books Will Speak Plain). Printed for a number of booksellers quite attractively by Tho. Hodgkin, and in apparent First Edition state, London, 1710 (Allibone, Volume II, 1454). xxxi, 1-384, [xvi pp. of Content and Errata]. Text-block is predictably waffled but yet yet and unmarked, still bright. The author was born at Bedford, was educated at Bedford School, and then studied for the ministry (1758?62) at Daventry Academy under Caleb Ashworth, says his Wikipedia entry, and in 1762 "became afternoon preacher to the independent (originally presbyterian) congregation at Mare Street, Hackney, and was ordained on 21 November 1763." He became eventually a "morning preacher" for the Church of England beginning in 1766. He ran a boarding school, too, and was friendly with the theologian Job Orton.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. He was born aroun…d 1730 and educated at Eton. In 1754 he married Elizabeth Nightingale. She died in May 1755, just a few days after the birth of their only son who was also named Wilmot. In 1763 he married Dorothy Shafto, and they had four children. The Vaughan family seat was at Trawsgoed in Cardiganshire, but Wilmot also inherited estates at Berwick-on-Tweed from his maternal uncle and in Devon through his wife.In 1755 Wilmot Vaughan entered Parliament as M.P for Cardiganshire, a seat he held until 1761. In 1765 he was elected as Member for Berwick, and then from 1768 he again held Cardiganshire until 1796. In 1766, he succeeded his father as 4th Viscount Lisburne but was able to retain his seat in the House of Commons because this title was in the Irish Peerage and did not entitle him to a seat in the House of Lords. Vaughan was active in politics, serving as a Lord of Trade from 1769 to 1770 and then as a Lord of the Admiralty until 1782. In 1776 he was created Earl of Lisburne, but this was still in the Irish Peerage and Vaughan hankered after the status of an English title. He had hopes that the Duke of Portland would arrange matters when the latter headed the coalition ministry of 1783, but he was overlooked. Vaughan's correspondence with Portland on the subject became increasingly bitter and rancorous as the years passed without fulfilling this ambition. Because of his declining health, he retired from Parliament in 1796 and died in 1800.Wilmot Vaughan was known as a man of learning and culture. He employed Robert Adam and Lancelot Brown to improve the house and grounds at Mamhead Park, which remained the principal family seat of the Earls of Lisburne until it was sold in 1822. Adam's work in the late 1760s included a design for a library.Provenance: Estate of Joaquin Romero Maura. Priced to go. ?Of the Law of Nature and Nations, originally published in 1672 as De Jure Naturae et Gentium Libri Octo, proposed a system of private, public, and international law based on natural law. It was written by Baron Samuel von Pufendorf (1632 ? 1694), a German political philosopher, statesman, and historian. The son of a Saxon clergyman, he had originally intended to pursue a career in the church, but after studying theology at the University of Leipzig his interests shifted to politics, law, and philosophy. In 1658 Pufendorf became a tutor to a minister to King Charles X of Sweden, and three years later he was granted a chair at the University of Heidelberg for the law of nature and nations, the first of its kind in the world. Two years after accepting an offer from the King of Sweden to teach at the University of Lund, Pufendorf published this book. Pufendorf was highly critical of those who abused power, whether they did so through the state or the church, and he proposed that international law should not be restricted to Christendom and instead respect the rights of all men. It was highly influential, not only in Germany, where it is said to have contributed to the Enlightenment during the eighteenth century, but throughout Europe and eventually in the United States. Pufendorf?s grounding of political concepts in natural law made him a person of interest to future American leaders such as Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.? [- W&M Law Library]. Generally a clean and crisp copy. This is the major work of the clergyman and theologian William Nicholls (1664- 1712). This book was published by subscription, and dedicated to Queen Anne. He did it unassisted and it cost him his 14 health. First published in 1549, under the reign of Edward VI, the Book of Common Prayer (BPC) was the first prayer book to include the complete forms of service for daily and Sunday worship in English. It contained Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, the Litany, and Holy Communion and also the occasional services in full: the orders for Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage, prayers to be said with the sick , and a funeral service. It also set out in full the propers : the collects and the epistle and gospel readings for the Sunday Communion Service. Old and New Testament readings for daily prayer were specified in tabular format as were the Psalms and canticles mostly biblical, that were provided to be said or sung between the readings.
